Have you ever climb under your TOY and swore that you some how climb under a j**p instead. Well I just did this weekend.
Olde Yeller has been dead for about 5 years now and has whining at me from the grave. So the operating table has been pulled out and Yeller has been placed upon it for his resurrection.
For those that remember Yeller know him well. For those that don’t, well… Yeller may just be the oldest 4X4 pick-up on this site. It's a 73 Hi-Lux and was a 2WD pick-up I had from my high school days along with a 73 j**p CJ. I happened to get the j**p a little too far sideways and rolled it…BAD! Well with it being totaled I started to miss having a 4x4 so I decided to take the transfer case and axles out from under it and put them underneath Yeller. It took a little bit of some modifications to get them there, but nonetheless they made it. Along with this I took out the old 18R-C engine and 4 speed tranny and put in a 22R and 5 speed tranny. Unfortunately I ended up pulling the engine and tranny back out about 8-10 years ago to put them in a 82 Toy that I eventually sold. Yeller was fitted back to the 18R-C, which finally died 5 years ago and was never driven again, under it own power at least. It currently has a 4" suspension lift (2” of springs and 2” in shackles and mounts) and sitting on a set of 30x10 tires.
Here is a pic of how looks now after its 3 hour bath and the engine, tranny, and T-case have been removed.
Here is a pic of somewhat the proposed new Olde Yeller will look like.
Plans will be to put a 22R back in and (maybe low geared) tranny w/ a 4.7 T-case and 4.7 dual case. 63” Chevy springs in the rear and modified stock rear springs up front. Maybe going back to stock Toy axles w/ 5.71 gears, or I may stick with the j**p axles. Haven’t fully decided on that yet. Would like to go full size Chevy or Ford Dana 60 and/or 44, but that may just have to wait unless I come across a good deal. It will be rolling on 36”- 40” swampers. Also have a custom toolbox that I have in the makes that will go with the bed in the proposed pic or with a custom flatbed. Also have plans for a new kind of spring perch. That will have to stay a secret for now, but it will be different.
