I have some strange noise coming from the front of my engine compartment and I cannot tell what exactly it is, so I am going to try to explain it in hopes of figuring it out. First of all, the noise comes and goes. I will do it for a day and then won't for a day, week, or month. It sounds like it is coming from the front of the engine, maybe a pulley. When idling, it sounds like a constant screeching noise or like someone is blowing alot of air pretty loudly. As I accelerate, the noise gets louder. Sometimes while driving, it will just suddenly go away. I have had all my belts replaced, that was done in August, so it shouldn't be any of those. The temp stays normal, idle is normal, the truck runs fine overall... I just have this random, spuratic noise. Any one had anything like this or any suggestions on what it might be. Sorry for the terrible explanation, its hard to describe noises.

Yeah I've gone through the screaching noise sound before. First what kind of engine is this on? Screaching noises are usually from a bearing going out. Now you have to find which one. Also water pumps sometime make a screaching noise when that bearing is going out. Kinda depends on what engine you have before I tell ya where to look. What I did is wait till it starts making the noise. Go to the front and open the hood. Take a piece of hose and listen to it like a stethascope. Sometimes you can isolate the noise better that way. If you have a V6 it could be any of the idler pulleys. or maybe even the tensioner pulley. Not sure about the loud wind noise. Possibly on the fan clutch? Guess it depends on what engine. Anway my guess is that it is a bearing somewhere...

Also water pumps sometime make a screaching noise when that bearing is going out. A lot of time with the water pump if you reach down and grab the front of fan or pump (depending on your engine) and try to move it up and down you can feel if the bearing is loose or not. It does seem like it would be more a worn bearing. The only other thing I can think of would be a worn or loose belt, but they usually don't go away for that long of a time before coming back to screeching at you again.
Just my two copper coins.

Yeah, a bearing was my original guess. Aside from the noise I already described, it also makes a chirping type of noise from the same general area. This is on a 22-RE also. I haven't had a chance to check anything out, but if I am unable to move the water pump pulley, could it still be the bearing in the pump? I don't think it is the fan clutch because I had that problem on my old Bronco and it sounded different than this. I am going with a bearing, but now I have to try to figure out which one

Oh yeah, I also had asked about a bad timing chain symptoms, would this be one of them? I have the chirping/metallic sound from the front that I just described, but I had just guessed it was the timing chain. I only have about 40-50k on this chain though, so I would hope its not already that. But, just wanted to pose that question.

My truck makes a little bit of a noise every now and then. It took me a while to isolate it turns out its the tensioner pulley bearing. I can move the pulley about a 1/16" from the front of the motor to the back of the motor. I called up a local bearing distributor and tried cross referencing the #'s but that didnt work so I have to take it in and match it up.

well, congratulations 86taco, you made the correct guess as to the problem and source of the noise. Your prize is one dead tensioner pulley from my truck, which crapped out today while driving down the highway! Aren't you excited, I know I am...

Just glad I could help. Noises like that can drive you crazy when you cant find out where they are coming from. Where did you find your replacement? I need no replace mine soon just have not gotten around to it yet. It has not made any noise in a while. Did yours sieze up when it finally went? Any catasrophic belt failure or anything like that? well atleast its a quick fix maybe 15 min. max to change. later

I had to drive to a city that is about 3 hours from here yesterday, and it started acting up Friday night, so I figured it would just go away like it had been. But, it didn't, it just stayed loud for most of the drive, then suddenly it got really loud and seized up. It started burning/melting the drive belt, but didn't completely melt it away. I actually continued driving for about 45 minutes to my destination because I had to be there by a certain time. Unfortunately, I was in a different city than my home, so I had no tools and no time, so I was forced to leave my truck in that town at a mechanic shop, which isn't even open until Monday and ride back home with some friends. So, I haven't actually found the pulley yet, I hope the dealership has it, but I won't know until Monday or Tuesday.

Noises like that can drive you crazy when you cant find out where they are coming from. Ain't that the truth!!! And some times just looking for them. ;D
I remember back in the early 90's when I was working in a repair shop and we had this one lady come in with some rattling noise. The lube techs drove the car and heard the noise. It did sound like something that was worn or wrong mechanically, just something small that was vibrating on something metal. So they checked under the hood, threw it on the lift and checked all underneath it, but no luck. After about 45 minutes of search you could tell they were getting a little with this car. So I went over to see what the problem was and looked the car over. Everything seemed fine, tight, and in place. Then I asked if they happen to look behind and under the dash. They didn't so I took a quick look under it and found one of hose clamps to the heater core was loose and hitting up against it. So the work ended with tighten the clamp, the rattle gone, one satisfied custumer, and three lube techs.

My Idler pulley was quiet for a long time until the other day I went muddin' and now it sounds horrible. So I went to Advanced Auto and they said there was two different sizes of bearings. So I had to take mine off pop out the bearing and beasure it. It was only $16.00. I was supprised that they could get just the bearing. Quick easy fix.
