i had recently replaced my head gasket. while i was at it, i replaced my intake manifold gasket, and exhaust manifold gasket. before i had done any of this, it used to burn antifreeze out of the tailpipe, or white smoke. now that i have changed it it seems to burn oil, or dark smoke out of the tailpipe only when i step on the gas. i haven't the slightest clue what it could be . i am thinking of checking the compression of my pistons which i did before i replaced the head gasket. they were all good. also when ideling, it will stall out on me on a rare occasion. could that effect it. any ideas or any helpfull info would be nice. thanks

HEy i have the exact same problem. I replace my heads gaskets, etc.., last December. Then i noticed that i was needing oil its wasnt leaking, so it must be burning it. It to runs good, idles good. Like if there were nothing wrong with it but it doesnt need oil once and awhile. I was told that it might the pistion rings. The truck has good compression thought so i dunno. BTW what engine do u have? Mine is a 88 3VZE- Laterz

Is your intake gasket leaking. Spray soem starting fluid around where the gasket is and listem for it to rev up. this will tell you if it is leaking

i have a 86 4runner, 22re, 2.4, manual transmission. i had to take the efi off because one of my injectors was leaking. i noticed that the intake manifold had two breaks in it already . how could that effect the motor burning oil? and thanks for the input so far, anything else would be real helpfull also.

Either way the intake manifold/gasket should have no effect on whether or not you're burning oil. Unfortunately a blown head gasket and a cracked head both can exhibit the same symptoms. Those being burning oil, antifreeze, mixing of the two etc.. You may have cured the leaky antifreeze problem with a new gasket, but the head itself could have issues. Has the motor been overheated? While the head was off did you have it magnafluxed?

yes, the engine overheated once in the summer, but never seemed to burn oil til' now. i didn't have it magnafluxed. what exactly does that mean? should i have the head shaved so it is level or flat?. thanks

Overheating an engine is the most common way to warp or crack a head or blow a head gasket thats why i asked. Magnafluxing is a procedure shops can to to detect tiny cracks in the head you might not be able to find or see with your eyes. Your problem may not even be the head, though. It could be your valve seals or oil rings. For your sake i hope its not oil rings. Out of curiosity, how much does it burn? If oil and antifreeze are not mixing together, and it doesn't burn excessively, you might just leave it until the next time you do major engine work.
