I've read all about how a precursor to the head gasket going on the engine is that there will be antifreeze loss. I have had antifreeze loss in my engine for about 3 years, but haven't ever seen an obvious leak. I know that the inside of my radiator is rusted/rotted out and I'm about to replace that, so I figured that the rusted out insides were what was causing the loss of fluid. If the head gasket is the problem, would the antifreeze be mixed in with the oil? Any other places to check out the head gasket? I keep reading about this problem and I'm praying its not about to happen to me now that I've read all of this. Oh yeah, I've got 169k on the 22RE

I've never heard of someone running three years with a blown head gasket so I figure your ok. Yes, if the antifreeze is getting into the engine it will mix with the oil. When you check your oil it might look like chocolate milk. Also there might be white residew on the underside of the oil cap. Its probably just a antifreeze leak from your radiator or cooling system. Check your hoses when your doing the radiator. It doesn't cost much to repalce the hoses and it is well worth it.

I agree with snorkelman. I had to replace my radiator about 2 months ago and it was $118.00 at Advanced Auto with a lifetime warranty. I usually go searchin the yards' but you never know how long it will last. Overheating Sucks.

One way to check is to take out your thermostat ( put everything back to gether, do this cold BTW) and fill the radiator all the way till there is no air. Start the motor with the cap off and look for execive bubles. Bubles = blown gasket. This is how we check for blown head gaskets on our dirt bikes. How is your compresion looking?
