I have an 87 5spd. with about 300k miles. I recently noticed that when I lay on the gas it seems like the truck isn't in gear. It is a manual so I know that I put it in gear and it just revs. Also when I am on the freeway and shift ithrough the gears it seems to take a second or to for the gear to engage. Finnaly as I drive in a gear sometimes the engine revs up and I can't gain any speed. Is this a symptom of clutch or is my trans going out?

My room mate says that it is my clutch, os can I change it myself or is it really difficult. I am away at school and dont have a whole lot of money so I really need to do it myself. Are there any websites that can give instructions on how to go about it, my hanes manual is not verry detailed.

Definately the clutch. Pretty simple to do, just takes some time. First time in my 4runner took 10 hours, second time took less then half of that. Haynes manual should be fine, there is not all that much to it.

I agree with sean. Your heart sinks when the clutch slips for the first time and then you just get pissed. It can be a pain in the ass balancing the trans/transfercase on a jack so have a extra set of hands, maybe two sets. Its not that hard as long as you are kind of familiar with wrenchin'

Another thing i have done that works is a cherry picker. If you have access to one. Put the arm of if in the cab and the chain through the hole in the floor where the shifters are and strap it to the tranny. A tranny jack is ideal, but this works too.
