well my truck needs an exhaust and was just wondering what kind of things people did for these engines for exhaust. like true duals, keep it stock, what size of pipe, etc. also what did you do to get rid of that stupid crossover pipe that goes over the transmission? i heard after a while itll over heat your back 2 cylinders. and also do headers make that much of a difference on these engines? thanks

I dont have headers yet on my truck, but from downey they state 14 horses which is a lot for headers. I never heard or had a problem with the crossover pipe, but this truck isnt pumpin out enough exhaust to do true duals. Shoot, a 5.3 v8 isnt pumpin out enough to make nice duals. They run better with the cat on and I went with a flowmaster 60 series muffler with a 2.5 inch turndown pipe. The smaller and tighter the pipe, the more torque you can obtain. Believe me, big pipes suck. I had a 5.5 inch smokestack on it and it loses power and burns fuel through the muffler.
In other words, stock cat and flowmaster muffler worked good for me.

Well you will notice a decrease in power without a cat, but my pipes were 2.25" i believe as along with my turndown pipe. Without the cat, there is gonna be a little bit of a rougher ride as unless it was my driving style, it seemed the engine was a lot rougher without the cat on.

well i dont have much to compare it to cause ive never had a cat. so just go with stock routing with 2.25" pipe all the way back?

I almost positive in that, its what I measured out by the o2 sensor and what pipe I decided to run from my cat to my muffler. You dont want the motor to be straining to push all the exhaust out, yet you want it tight enough to produce torque numbers so yes 2.25 inch.

My cat's gone and a new one costs an arm, a leg and an eye from Toyota here! However, Summit Racing sell them for around $120 ... what do you all think about it? Will it do the same job as an OEM one from Toyota? And a question for you cr884runner: first you mentioned that you found the 2.5" pipe best, then you said you prefer the 2.25" better ... which one's the correct size please?

Try a Magnaflow cat, they have a bolt-in one.And the correct size is 2.25 some like to run 2.5 but to each their own.
