Unless you are really going thru water that deep its a waste of time, and it kills power. TRy breathing thru a straw. Try google

It will however improve his mpg, aside from looking really cool. You can make your own snorkle or buy them online. Check ebay and craigslist to see if you can find one for cheap, a buddy of mine got one on craigslist for $75.

Just curious but how will it improve mpg? Is it the same concept as a k and n where it will obtain more air thus creating a bigger air/fuel mixture with efi? Ive never understood how k and n's are supposed to save gas though lol

I've always seen gains of 3-5 mpg with a snorkle. Look at how it's sucking in air stock and then look at the more direct flow of the snorkle.

Now just curious and I apologize if it seems like i am stealing this thread, but i see a lot of those guys with those chevy bogger trucks that run their snorkel right out of the hood and have the filter outside of the snorkel... would it be bad to say make a custom snorkel by using pvc and running it up to the top by the drivers door and puttin a k&n cone filter at the end?

i've seen one's that come out the center of the hood (home made) I would run it out the fender and up the drivers door/windshield frame. I wouldn't do a cone filter though, I would cut a regular k&n filter to fit inside the square end of the pipe.

Do you mean the ones created for stock? I have always wanted to do a snorkel like that and was surprised that nobody did that... Figured it'd be safer to keep the filter above the engine even though it is snapped shut... Just curious, but why not the cone filter?

Im goin to be makin a home made snorkel for my 88 22re out of pvc next week or so, i was gonna do it with the K&N up top but i thought the K&N would get covered in mud and all wet so im just goin to run the pvc right out of the airbox and out the fender and up the A pillar..i can put a 90 degree elbow right where the inlet is behind the headlight and it should work good, just might starve for air

Well I was thinking the same before, yet they have those drychargers for those k&n filters for the dusty conditions and in mud it won't be bad... seein those bowtie mudders go up out of the hood to the middle of their windshield and they dont seem to have a problem... i can see having to clean it every now and then when deep muddin, but shouldnt be a problem...

yeah that is another good reson to get a k&n, you can just wash it when it gets dirty.

Is the MPG gain cuz its like running a high rise intake? with the longer runners they build more higher end torque, The air would build up more speed, just not a lot of it.

Your air intake doesnt count as a runner. Though i know what you are saying. Tuned port engines make more torque then multiport. Longer intake runners gives more torque but robs horsepowerl The only way i could see the snorkle helping you out is by delievering much less air to the engine. The mixture is controlled by the ecu so it can adapt for small changes like this, deleivering less fuel at the same throttle position. It also means less power. Basically like changing from a four barrel carb to a two barrel, just not quite as dramatic. Ive never had a 22re, but on the 3.slow i cant see any mod gaining you 3-5mpg.

The less air thing makes sense. I dont think I have ever really noticed any major gains with a lot of my mods. Well maybe the header and exhaust did bump up the mpg's a little.

Just curious Sean, but how would a snorkel deliver less air? Even with a k&n on top?

I had a snorkle on my cherokee, and it basically acts as a cold air intake, I gained noticeable power and 4-6 mpg. Will be installing one on my yota when I have the money to spare.
