I have a 92 4runner that has been a challenge from the start. I just replaced the engine and its running, but it has some issues that are frustrating to say the least. it is a manual, 4wd SR5 4 runner w the infamous 3vze 3.0.
My truck generally runs fine aside from a light ticking that i think means it needs a valve adjustment. If i drive it longer than 20-30 minutes however, it starts to loose power around the 3000rpm range. If I try to take it over that it responds somewhat similar to the feel of running out of gas; the engine doesnt kill, but theres no power. That limit to RPMs steadily declines till the truck is un-driveable. I then have to let it sit for anywhere form 1-3 hours for it to be back to where it was.
A friend says it could be the ignitor... Im thinking mabey a fuel pump, althought that was just replaced 8 months ago w the new engine. Replaced the fuel filter w the engine... Replaced all the injectors and seals...
so... thats where Im at... It acts similar to vaporlock, but A: its not hot outside, and B: my engine is closer to cool than Hot, and ill open my radiator and it doesnt boil over... another post on google suggested the distributor? I was hoping for more input or similar experience...
thanks in advance...

I'd check all of the injector plug ins, etc. Then again it could be the rings, I've heard of people who did not break the motor in correctly losing power as the compression built up.

Hi, I have just the same problem in my 3VZE. I thinking may be injectors or fuel pump, but for your experience, that's not be the problem. You can find the problem?
Sorry for my bad english i'm from Argentina.
thanks

I have a smaller problem than yours:
Mine starts stalling on idle when it heats up, and it's not a case of idle speed set too low because then it revs up too much to be kept running. Power doesn't lack at all when I floor it, but theidea that it stalls on idle kills me, especially when wheelin! THAT I can't figure out!
As for your problem, I'd say it's an ignition coil as that problem happened to me on two other vehicles! Check it out with a meter (no idea how) or get someone to check it out for you or if you can manage, try replacing the ignition coil by either buying a new one or borrowing a good one and see what happens. To me the symptoms are those of a faulty coil.
My 0.2c

Forgot to mention I live in Malta, a VERY HOT country in the summer and not too cold in the winter either!

I have a 95 auto with the same problem. I thought it was due to wires being exposed but that is not the case. My upper pulley's just came off on the freeway yesterday. So I'm going to have them check the "almost stall" as well. I'll let you know what they say.

As for the stall, they could not duplicate the problem. They retimed it and changed all the plugs, wires and cap. thats all they could chalk it up to.
