I have a 96 Tacoma, 4WD that the rear leaf spring has broken on. The break is just in front of where is is bolted with the U bolts. I was informed that there might be a factory recall, or a way to have them replaced by Toyota at their cost. Is this true, if not what recommendations are there for replacing them with a mild lift (2") included. Is Downy the best, or where else is there an affordable supplier to get them?

I haven't heard of a recall on the leafs but it is worth a check. Call the dealership for that. You have several different options when getting new leafs. You can go the cheap and easy route of searching junkyards for a replacement (www.junkyarddog.com) or your own Pick n pull. If you want a little lift you can get a 2" block under your stock springs to bring it up a bit. If you want a new set of springs that lifts your truck, there are a bunch out there (all-pro, downey, advanced off-road). Depends on what you want to spend. There is also the option of getting some chevy springs that are longer. You would need to weld on some new front perches for this and might want to use a small block to lift the rear, but they flex like crazy and ride nice. Plus they are cheap. There are a bunch of guys who have done this. Just depends on what you want and how much you got.

there was a recall but your probably too late for that, but my 95 did the same thing and it IS a typicle problem, I redid mine with an extra ply, it raised the back just a little but made the ride almost unbearable, if you do this, make sure your woman has a real good sports bra on.
