Hi all..
I just picked up a 96 std cab 4x4 tacoma with 4cyl and 5spd, and only 77k miles. Its a very clean truck, and I hope to have it for a while.
Its going to need a new muffler soon, and i want to get an aftermarket one that will sound deep and throaty, and increase low end power. I plan on buying the muffler separately, and then having a shop bend up some pipes to connect it from the cat-back.
Any recomendations on what muffler to use, and what size pipes for my goals?
the second thing is it seems to idle a bit rough. (the stickshift shakes in neutral). The idle seems low, at around 600 rpms when its all warmed up, and it makes it a bit difficult to get moving without stalling, especially up hills.
I haven't done anything to the truck yet, I plan on doing a full electrical tune up, oil change, filter change, and gas filter too.
Hopefully this will help smooth things out, but any other suggestions? Should I have a shop plug it into a computer to check the sensors? (there are no warning lights on)
It currently has p225's for tires, but eventually i plan on a mild lift and 32's. i am concerned that the way it idles will make it tough to drive with the 32's...
any help/info would be greatly appreciated!
thanks Joel

for the muff i would go with a flowmaster 40 series. good low end and sounds great. for the tube i would go with 2 1/4 on the four banger. it may sound small but is the best performance choice. as far as the the idle that is how my 92 was and i did a tune up and put in a k and n airfliter and it helped it out alot. But that was just my 22re i don't know if this will work as well for you. redtoy92

600 rpm does sound a bit low. That can be adjusted. When you take it in have them check the idle and adjust if needed. Not a big deal. Getting it fully serviced is a good idea after buying it. Sounds like a good truck. If your looking for lifts there are a bunch of 3" spacer lifts for the tacoma and are relatively cheap. They can go for around $300 - $1000 depending on shocks, coils and such. The spacer lifts are basically a 3" piece that goes above your front springs and then a 3" block for the rear springs. Do a google search on tacoma lifts.

I have a 96 ext. cab with a 2.5 in Daystar coil spacer lift and blocks in the back. I run 32x11.50 Maxxis Mudders on 8in wheels. They run fine. I am looking at exhaust right now and by what I've read a Flowmaster Delta Flow 40 series is the way to go.

Timing belt/chain could also be a little loose I have found out from the toy tech's that the taco's idle ranges from under 600 to 1000 rpm's warm anything in this range is o.k.

Definetly, go with the flowmaster and some 2 1/2 piping. A K&N goes well with an exaust system. As for lifts, check out ebay, their are some 2-3 inch spaces for cheap, also Daystar has a cheap lift.
