Yesterday I climbed under my taco and did the routine oil change...and no...that's not the oil that I saw that made me make this post. In the process of changing my oil, I look over and there is oil beading up getting ready to drip comming from the front diff. I'm not sure of all the terminology to say exactly where it was at, but on the passenger side, when the diff housing ends, i'm guessing there is a seal there. It has the famous markings of leaking oil....how major is this problem? This is the first time I noticed it and it didn't drip once the whole time i was under the truck, which turned out to be about 2 or 3 hours because I cleaned mud off the whole frame. I had done some wheeling in some sand/clay/nasty mud and i was wondering if maybe some sand got up in the seal causing it to leak a little....this is my first 4x4 so i'm lost on what to do. Also it is very thin oil, i don't know what wade of oil goes in the diff, but this is like WD-40, you don't even need a rag to wipe it off, you can just smear your fingers around....doesn't seem normal to me...

Could my breather have taken in water....diluting the oil....and allowing it to have a low enough viscosity to run out of the seals?

Hmmm...the diff oil is pretty thick stuff. You can drain the diff to see if the viscosity is any different. I would bet that oil you saw was from something else dripping above the diff. Maybe the steering resevoir or something. Steering fluid or brake fluid is very thin and might be waht your seeing. I would check those items first. I dont' hear of many diffs leaking where you described it. Let us know what you find.

The strange thing about oil, especially when seen down low on the rig, is that it's not always really leaking at the place you spotted it.
Real good EX: A while back I noticed that the lower half of my rear diff was covered in oil. Cleaned it off, but the seal looked ok. So checked around the tranny. Was clean except for one little drop that started to form as I was checking over. Well I check the oil level.....good. So I waited till the weekend and found out that my front tranny seal was leaking.

From the oil markings, it doesn't look like it's comming out from a higher place, it looks like it's starting to come out as it goes down the seal. I'll try and take a pictrue (the wonderful world of digital) and post it up here so ya'll can see what i'm seeing.....thanks for the input though, i'll look higher for markings.
Thanks, Chad
