OK, so for the passed few months, my Tacoma has been missing intermittently, but pretty bad. I loose all power for a full second. Feels like i am slipping on ice.
Anyway, it is a 1997 3.4L 4x4 w/75,000 miles. No mods. Where to start? Plugs? Those damn things are so burried, I think I'll have to remove the entire throttle body to get to them. Too damn cold to worry about it now, but when it does get warm, I'm gonna find it.
Looking for idea. TIA

Are you the original owner? If not and some one else tried to so call up grade the plugs . I work at a dealer and if you don't use "TOYOTAS" plug socket otherwise a reg thin wall socket no impact they are too thick same for reg. plug sockets . the shield inside the wall tapers down. We find alot of plugs that are not all the way in. this is just a thought.

Interesting. I am not the original owner, however i did replace the plugs with no help.
Wires are next, then on to the fuel and intake system. Any other suggestions?

Dang Mike I hate your still having this problem. If you were closer we could spend a day trackin it down. You'll find it, but I know how it is when you don't have much time to work on your truck. Just kinda get to it when you have a chance.

I found out about this the HARD way myself. it was one of those bad adventures miles from home I still was able to get the rig home As for wires until you complete any engine mods stick with factory ones. unless you have ignition system upgrade in mind. and intake I'd like some ideas myself. but working on it.

Does the special plug socket also go for 99's. I just used a plug socket from the auto parts store, and I think it worked fine......or did it??

This happened in a 96 I myself own a 99 I picked the truck up for a guy at work and the tech told me about this I'm not cdertain but I believe it's up to 2000 models I will try and find out more but you might want to check them over with deep welled socket. We got lucky only 2 of 6 were stripped and working at a dealer has its perks. I will definitly will get all the details I can it may take a couple of days .

Problem solved! ;D I replaced the plug wires and sure enough one of them had 2 good sized chunks out of it that i am certain were causing the problem. thanks for your help. BTW, i was going to replace the coil packs too until Toyota told me they were $102 EACH . No thanks.

No, i didn't notice any dip in my MPG. Also, after I changed the plugs and wires, I did have the problem a couple more times. I then replaced the air filter and added a can of fuel treatment. Now, it's all gone.

I would start with your general tune up. Check your fuel filter too.

So, believe it or not, I am back to this problem. But now, I have a definate answer. Since it has gotten colder here lately, I have been having this problem again. Finally, the CEL came on. I took it to AutoZone to pull the codes (they do it for FREE) and turns out to be a faulty TPS. This would explain the sudden drop/hesitation in power that felt like it was missing.
Once I replace it, I'll update.
