Hey guys, this is my first post here and also a newb at this topic here. Well i've had my eyes on a Tacoma for a while especially the Pre-Runners. I just love how the Pre-runners are more lifted than the regular 4x2 xtra cabs. The thing is just that the Pre-runner prices are so much more. I'm not really sure what the difference is between the 2 except the height difference.
What makes the pre-runner that much higher? Is it because it has a suspension upgrade or a body lift? I'm very interested in purchasing a regular 4x2 xtra cab tacoma and reaching the extra height the pre-runners are at. I want to know if i get the 4x2 lifted will i feel any performance difference +/- compared to the Pre-runners. And also what is the typical costs (parts/labor) to get this taken care of. Sorry if the questions sound ignorant, i am new to the truck performance area. Thanks for all the help

Tobal - Welcome to ToyotaOffRoad.com!
The Pre-Runner is basically a Tacoma 4x4 with no front differential. There is a very big difference between the Pre-Runner and the standard 4x2 Tacoma.
As you mentioned the ride height is one of them. This is due to the suspension setup. It is higher and stronger than the standard and will take a LOT more abuse. I am not sure, but i would assume that the towing and load weights would be much higher as well.
Additionally, the Pre-Runner is available with the TRD package giving you the rear locker.
I don't know what engines are available in the standard, but you can get the 3.4 v6 in the Pre-Runner.
Overall, the Pre-Runner is a 4x4 without the x4.
I hope this helps, and didn't confuse you.

Welcome Tobal!! I would vote for the pre-runner package if your not interested in getting a 4x4 vehicle. As a proponent for buying used rather than new, have you looked around for a slightly used tacoma? Sometimes there are some good ones in the paper, autobytel.com , ebay.com , trader.us.com , or any other used car listing. You might even find just some prices to compare and get an idea of what kind of deal you should be looking for when buying new. I've been very pleased with the vehicles I have purchased used over the years. If you can find something with low miles...it will still have the new car smell without the higher price.. Just my $.02 Again welcome and congrats on whatever you decide to buy.

Thanks guys for the warm welcoming and info. Well it seems to me like the Pre-Runner has stronger suspension that gives it the ride height. I'm mainly looking at something w/ a V6. like the reg. 4x2 xtra cab v6. What will it take and how much will it costs to get up to a Pre-runner standard or if not better.

Hello and welcome I agree with snorkleman I myself work for toyota and from expierience usually your best bet is a certified one they come broken in and you usually get the original full warranty . And most of all you'll save some money to spend on goodies

Pre Runners are kinda tight, but I know I'd be screwed without the 4 wheel drive on my taco. You can get a 4x4 pretty cheap too. Mine's a 98 reg cab, 2.7 with 80k miles and perfect all around and it only cost me 7000 bucks a year ago. So if i were you i'd definatly look around for a slightly used 4x4 over a pre runner

Damn, where do you live that you got such a good deal?? Was there anything wrong with the truck....i bought a 99 extedned cab TRD SR5 (whatever that means) with 111 thousand miles for 11 grand.....but then again the truck was in perfect mechanical condition w/o a scratch.
