I test drove a 98 Taco Xtra-cab Prerunner (90,000 miles)with the 3.4 and the auto tranny today. The reason I'm shopping is because my 91 4Runner spontaneously combusted while I was having lunch friday. Anyway, this truck was at a reputable Toyota dealer in town, and they swore up and down that everything checked out perfectly normal. But driving it, I would have sworn that it needed an engine or transmission mount. Getting on and off the gas and just driving, the gear selector was shaking around a great deal(to my mind). And when coming to a complete stop, there was a clunk in the driveline. You could feel it and faintly hear it. As you could imagine, they said "they all do it." I drove about 4 other tacos today and I couldn't find any others that "did it too." I drove a 2000 regular cab, 4 cyl, 5spd, 4wd with 155K that drove fantastic. Please share Tacoma wisdom and insight. Oh, and by the way, if I wind up with a Prerunner, I will be finding and old 4Runner or 'Cruiser to fill the driven front axle void!
Thanks for the help! Hope to have a car monday sometime!
