Well after a quick call to the dealer to find out that this head gasket had already been replaced under the recall we decided to do it ourselves. The dealer wants $122 for the gasket and $780 for labor! Just wondering if anyone has replaced this gasket before and has any advice. I've done several Chevy's before, but I remember the first one I did took me 3 tries to get it right. I am hoping to master the Toyota head gasket on the first try...with some helpful hints from you all if you'd be so kind. Thanks!

The only advise I have is once you have it apart. make sure to check that the head isn't warped and everything is super clean before re-assy. If you've done head gaskets before I don't think that it will be any more difficult

I found it to be easier than doing a chevy 4.3 head gaskets, because the parts fit back together better. I would put on a new timing belt on while you have it apart.

I just replaced the timing belt, water pump, did a starter rebuild and changed the radiator in November, so all that good. Any idea if the heads are aluminum or steel?

one more quick question - I just talked to a former toyota mechanic and he said he would not machine the heads unless absolutely necessary. He said it could turn it into an oil burner because it might get so tight that it would suck oil down past the rings - any thoughts?

I talked to a couple of the older guy's here at work and they said almost the same thing not as detailed they said only if absolutly necessary. they say it's better to just replace them. but if you're only shaving a very small # it's not going to affect it that much but if you have to take off a large # don't do it. so I'd say it all depends on how warped it is.

thanks for the info. You don't happen to know if the whole intake can come off in one piece do you? If it has to come apart do you know if that gasket is included in the oem kit?
