I am planning to do an automatic trasmission swap in my '86 runner. My research indicates that the A340F trasmission from a '96 or newer will easilly swap into my older runner.
My question is, is the A340F the only automatic trasmission used in the '96 and newer? I am bidding on a tranny on ebay, but the guy doesn't indicate what model, only that it is out of a '97
Any help would be greatly appriciated
Thanks, Kyle

there is a difference between A340F 4cyl and the A340F for the 6cyl they list the same codes but have different part numbers RZN185 has a part # 35000-3D571 the VZN185 gets PART # 35000-3D550

Thanks Hoodlum,
I got my tranny. It is out of a V6. I am installing it into my 4cyl. I think everything is going to work. At least, I hope it will.:shootme:

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the '96 and up 3.4/auto combo had a driver side drive shaft and an '86 has a pass. side driveshaft. Could be wrong, but if not it would be a small but VERY important detail! Good luck!

sounds like a great swap. you'll definitely have to keep us updated on your progress.
Thanks again for your driveshaft help. I'll calling the junkyards hopefully tomorrow.

Well, I somehow missed that this thread was still alive. Sorry for not updating sooner. I received and installed the V6 A340F auto tranny in my '86 22re. The only real issue was that the flex plate from my 4cyl wouldn't bolt up to the V6 torque converter. I have a machine shop and was able to modify the flex plate to fit, but if anyone decides to do this mod, I would recommend trying to get the flex plate that goes with the tranny when you buy it. The real reason for doing this swap is that the A340F has a devorced t/c that can be removed from the tranny. The A340H has an integrated t/c that cannot be removed. The auto t/c was removed and thrown in the junk pile. A gear driven t/c from an older manual tranny was installed in it's place with 4.7:1 reduction gears. I got the t/c adapter and 4.7 gear set from Marlin and installed the gear driven t/c behind the auto tranny. This set up is SWEET!! When you are wheel'n in the rocks, you have one foot for the gas, and one for the break, and you don't have to worry about side stepping the clutch, killin the motor, or burning up the clutch. With 5.29's in the diffs, and 4.7's in the t/c, and then you allow for the slip of the torque converter at low rpm's it give me about a 100:1 crawl ratio I now run 39.5 IROK's, (by far the best tire I've ever owned for off road use) and have all the power I need to turn them in any terrain.
