95 4runner engine oil cooler

just had engine totally rebuilt at engine shop, my haynes manual shows a round plug where the engine oil cooler goes, does this engine really need a engine oil cooler for basic street driving conditions? very little off roading with this nice ride! suspect old cooler is contaminated after rod let loose. new one is high $$. already went over budget on this! wife gonna be mad if i got to buy one!

If the old oil cooler dosen't leak I would just flush it out with gas, or paint thinner, let it dry and install it. As for if the engine needs the oil cooler, IMO there is too many advantages to leave it off.
