I need help. I have a 1997 4runner and the right rear brake seems to stick when I stop the vehicle. It also seems ultra sensitive when driving really slow and sometimes the truck will feel like I've slammed the brakes on. I also had an scary experience on the highway, but I don't know if it's related.... I felt a weird vibration like the lug nuts were loose on one of the wheels. As I applied the brakes it got a lot worse, but when I checked the lug nuts... they were all tight. I rocked the truck back and forth and didn't notice anything strange. So, I got back on the highway.. not the slightest vibration or wobble. I had no way of duplicating what happened so I was unable to diagnose if this is a serious problem. I had a wife and two kids in the truck at the time and I have some serious 'faith' issues in the event we go on a road trip If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know Rydpg

here is a portion of a post i wrote for a Tacoma owner..hope this helps, or at least a place to start.
"i'm assuming you have drum brakes on the rear wheels....
when i went to replace the bearings on my rear wheels, I got some oil on the brake shoes which caused them to fall apart and become soft. So,when i would go to brake, the shoe would jam itself against the drum, causing the wheel to skid and jump, instead of slide...
It looks to me like one of two things...your rear brakes are worn out and need to be replaced, or you need to adjust them. you can take the truck in and have it done, or easily do it yourself...."
i would start with adjusting your brakes. jack up your rear end so that you tires are off the ground. then there should be a little oval hole on the inside of your wheel (should be covered by a rubber plug). then take two screw drivers...one pushes a little tab inside that releases a racheted star nut...then take your other screw driver and rotate the star nut untill your tire spins freely. now you can take out the screw driver that is holding the tab, and rotate the star nut the other way until you wheel just grabs when you spin it. do the other side next.....the final step would be to drive your truck in reverse and step on the brakes...toyotas have self- adjusting brakes so by backing up and braking, your brakes will adjust the rest of the way.
hope this helps....its kinda hard to explain, and probably made no sense, unless you know how to do it already.
