WD 40 the WHOLE truck to it in the rims teh fenders the bed everything. Drew ;D You have GOT to be kidding! This must be a newbie hazing...right...please tell me it is. #1, WD40 is a petroleum based product. Somewhere between a solvent & an oil. Paint DOES NOT like this type of product!! Depending on the quality of your paint job, it'll stain or tear it off. No matter how fast you get it off. #2, Personally(& I know ALOT of others on the board are with me), I believe in the TREAD LIGHTLY! philosophy. So, that said, how can I KNOWINGLY go out on a trail & lay down an oil slick over every inch of ground I travel? I can't remember off the top of my head, but I know there are specific products out there that are made to make mud removal easier & they don't hurt anything. Later...

use pam cooking spray instead of wd40 I use it on long hauls so the bugs come off the front of my car easy. works good for mud too.

Later... i should make it clear that this is a mog bog truck. it sports mog axles, blown 572 and 49inch iroks. it doesnt see much of normal trails. when it does it is on rocks or snow.the only thing that is killing the paint is the rocks lol . I agree with everyone else on the Pam idea. It works well, but expect to have to reapply. You might want to consider sealing some of the other more leak-prone areas in your vehicle. I don't know if you see a lot of water in your mud, but if you do, the placement of a 22r(e) distributor really is less than ideal. You can seal the cap with RTV, but this might cause it to overheat and it doesn't do your wires much good. Even with new wires and plenty of dielectric grease, I still occasionally run into stalling promlems. Diff breathers are easy. I managed to snake some clear vinyl tubing from work (think beer-bong hose only smaller) onto the factory breather and clamped it there. I then ran it up to the bed. Without the cap on the breather or a filter on the hose, this isn't a very good permanent solution, but works well for short term use. Then before the races last year I had an inspiration. Ya know those yellow rubber gloves for cleaning, doing dishes, etc? Call it coincidence, but the medium size is a GREAT fit over the cap. What I did was snip off the ends of every finger. Run a plug wire through each one and the coil wire through the last one. Duct tape the ends of the fingers and duct tape it over the distributor. It stays high and dry ;D I also had just bought a new set of Warn hubs so I stuck a glove over each one and duct taped it there. Maybe it was overkill as the hubs have a lifetime warranty and are supposed to be sealed very well, but knock on wood.....they're still alive. Last place you might want to check is around the little rubber seal that covers where the shifters enter the tranny and t-case....mine don't fit well anymore so a few cheap pipe clamps and it's all good

I'll see what I can do here in the next couple of days. I don't have a camera here at school, but I'm sure someone does. It's almost time for me to put a new glove on there anyway. I took the old one off for the winter since I don't see much trail time.
Anyway, if I can't find a camera, I can atleast try and do something in a paint program, AutoCAD, Pro/E.....something so you can see what I mean ;D

Wax wax wax, it prevents rust and mud cleans off good. I got krazy carpets (the plastic sleds) in my wheel wells, mud washes off real quick.

What would be the best way to waterproof your destributor cap to keep water out of it. I had to wash some mud off of the motor, and when i started it back up it kinda heistated. I thought it was cold.... but water got in the cap... how can i stop water from getting in it when i go in the mud/water.

for those out there who are having problems with getting the distributor wet during cleaning periods put a plastic grocery bag over the distributor when you are hosing it down......Just remember to take it off when your done. lol

In response to the question about water proofing the distributer cap: I siliconed all the plug wires at the distributer cap and found a rubber boot type thing that covers the cap and all the wires. I cant remember but I think It was off a 80's 2wd Yota. I have never had problems with getting the distributer wet and have had water up to top of the hood. Another good tip is to carry a can of WD-40 to spray on the inside of the cap IF it does get wet hope this helps!
