Do any water crossing when you hit the trails and hate having to change the diff oil every time you get back. Then here's a tip that will let you get into the deep water and save your oil too.

I was inspecting under the rear of my rig one day and noticed that my breather was gone. What the f**k happened to that ? I didnt do any offroading prior to that. Some diff fluid was leaking out of the hole. I took a small piece of clear hose that I had and stuck it into the hole on the diff and put some liquid nails around it. It worket pretty well. I was surprised. the liquid nails bonded well to the diff case, I cleaned off all the grease first. then I zip tied the end of the hose above the cross member that is just under the bed. no problems yet. It has been installed for about 3 months. McGuyver is my hero!!!!!!Red Green to but I didnt use ;Dany duct tape.. ;D

Yeah you can learn a lot from McGuyver. I've done a lot of Mickey Mousing. Most of my friends call me the Holy Grease Monkey.
I also did construction for 12 years and I always wondered what liquid nail wouldn't stick to. So far I know it sticks to anything but any form of liquid.

Thanks to a buddy of mine I learned of a Nissan breather that fits perfectly into the threads that our stock Toyota breathers use. The Nissan part number is 38323-C6010, and I was charged $4.50/each. The difference between this breather and the Toyota breather, is that instead of having a cap to keep debris out, it just has a long stem, perfect for attaching a hose to.
Or you can take 2 seconds to pry the cap off the stock breather and stick a piece of 3/8" ID hose over it and a small hose clamp ($.25 ea)

I recently reworked my breather. I threaded a pipe nipple into the rearend and added hose onto that , hose clamped it. then ran the hose up to my driverside taillight. I drilled a hole smaller that my hose pushed it in to the taillight and then used some liquid nails around the hose. Seems completely waterproof now. Atleast good enough for what I do with it.

I just did the breather mod last night using the hardware store approach. Cost me $8 for the fittings, hose, clamps and all. The 1/8"NPT threads are tight going into the metric thread hole but went in fine. For $8 I can't think of a better mod that will save you having to change the diff oil after getting into deep water or mud.

Did you notice any sign of water in your oil? I'd think that if the snorkels are working you wouldn't need to chagne the oil once you're sure they're working.

I plan on changing my gear oil to Redline, so I think I'll test the snorkels first. At $7.00/qt. I don't want to have to do it any more than I have to. Fortunately I have a huge puddle that forms in front of my house every time it rains so I won't have to go too far to soak my new breather setup.

I ran the rear one up behind the left tail light. The end of the tube is about 1" below the top of the truck bed. The front one is located in the passenger side rear corner of the engine bay about 1" below the lip of the engine bay. With the intake for the motor being about the same level as the headlight fixture I figure the diffs are well protected and I can run in water up to tire depth (31" ) without risking taking water into the motor or diffs. Not that I ever have been or plan on getting into anything that deep, but it's nice to know I'm prepared just in case there's no choice sometime. Regards, Indy
