It is always a good idea to check all of your fluids after being in deep water, or mud. Even if you have good breather extensions, water or mud can, and does get in through the seals. Espesialy the pinion seals. Mud gets trapped behind the dust cover on the flang and eventually is forced past the pinion seal. I have breather extensions on both diffs, the tranny, and the transfer case. The extensions run all the way up to a manifold that I built that is mounted to the highest place I could get it on the firewall under the hood. I still occasionally get water in my gear oil.

I just did the breather mod last night using the hardware store approach. Cost me $8 for the fittings, hose, clamps and all. The 1/8"NPT threads are tight going into the metric thread hole but went in fine. For $8 I can't think of a better mod that will save you having to change the diff oil after getting into deep water or mud. Regards, Indy If you use brass pipe barbs they are soft and will thread right in i used them on all my trucks

i use a rubber balloon over the diff breather This works very well as long as you don't go in the mud too much (they tear apart) I've used this in the past but gave it up for a more dependable set up for mudding and water crossings

Anyone have any pictures of doing this on the front differential? I am about to try to help a friend set up diff breathers on his 96 taco, auto v6.

The front is already done for you you will find the end inside the engine compartment drivers side around the lower center of the apron assy. There are a few pics with the write-up DEADLY did a a while back. I believe it's in the project section of the board.(I tried to copy the link but can't get it to work)

Finally got around to doing mine! I've been driving about three feet deep in the colorado river for about the past month in a half and figured why would I change my fluids just to take on more water, so I bought some supplies. Drained the differentials (that was some nasty sludge!) then put on the snorkeled breathers and I can't wait until I check my fluids again and see much cleaner oil! Thanks for the tip dude!!!

This is the first thing I did when I bought my truck! In the front I have the hose going up into my engine compartment with a small filter on the end. In the rear it comes up under my bed

Or you can take 2 seconds to pry the cap off the stock breather and stick a piece of 3/8" ID hose over it and a small hose clamp ($.25 ea) Well the idea here is to get the hose over more tubing so that the hose can't be pull off as easy if it gets snag on something.I don't see how the hose could get caught on something since the hose is made out of fiberglass, rubber, or plastic. It doesn't have a rough surface to catch on rocks and weeds. Scott

I do deep water crossings every weekend. I go through numerous muddy washes and creeks the a river crossing at the end of the trail. water depth varies between6" and 2.5' me and a bulit 4runner do this. which breather do ya'll think works the best. I am getting sick of changing diff oil.

I did the mod with the nissan breathers last week
The nissan breathers are a direct fit, it was simply a matter of unthreading the stockers, threading in the new breathers, and running some 3/16 vacuum hose-I ran the front right up against the firewall and I ran the rear into the tail light housing. Then I zip tied everything up and now shes good to go
