This is to replace your rear window relays with some easy to find relays from the parts store. u can find the relay behind the drivers side panel just past the door. It should be the gray box.

I just used silcone sealer and wrapped it with tape till it dried. If u do this mod ur rear window will not work. because it get it power though one of the relays on that u will be removing. but there is a way to add anthere relay and make it work again. I just haven't have the time to find out how. If i have time this weekend i will look in to it. I am not sure on the cost of fixing the old relays but i spent around $10 dollars on my set up. I was able to find some locally. but here is a web page u can order them from: www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=330-070www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=330-073They also have wiring harness u could buy if u want. Just make sure the relay u buy has the 87 and 87a pins because some of them have two 87 pins these will not work. u will melt some wiring if u use one of these relays. So look closely at the bottom or side of the relay it should say if not sure i wouldnt use it. U can also use a meter to check the conection beteen pin 87 and 87a should be open at all times. The reason u don't want to bypass the relay is because the factory rocker switch wasn't ment to handle the load of the window motor and will burn up over time. thats why they use relays to take the load off of the switch. Here is a good wire up on fixing the rearwindow and will answer any questions u might have. www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/RearWindow.shtml

I just bought 1990 4RUNNER 2.5TD. It is in a good condition in general, but one of the few little problems is that I can't open the rear window from outside with the key and if I have to opoen the back door, first I take the back window down with the inside button and then I go out to open the door. Could you please send me the fatory diagram for 1990 model so I can try to fix it. Thanks!

sounds like a relay is stuck u will have to replace it. When u let off the button it should click if it don't it's stuck. It could be rusted in rust in side.

agrees with tacoboy, more likely relay stuck.. check for a draw on you battery with the relay in and also with it out, if the draw goes away with relay out replace realy, if not you have wire somewhere corrupting your circut.

the gray box has relays in it to and one of them is stuck. try changing it or just unplugging it and ur batt. should stop draining.

the motor for the tailgate window is that same as all the other motors used in 2nd generation 4runners and trucks, so they are easy to find. and the rails and regulater stuff they usually sell on ebay for pretty cheap. it seems like a better idea then a whole new tailgate. my .02cents mock1
