I just changed my OEM 14" steering wheel on my '88 2wd pickup to a 13" APC black three spoke steering wheel (not the one with all the padding) and the handling of the truck has dramatically improved. Steering response is much quicker. Along with a new Monroe steering damper the handling is better for quick turns. (no power steering)
My set up is going to be for rallycross, so I need the better steering response. I recommend this steering wheel downsize to those with 2wd and street tires. My offroad tires are Pirelli gravel tires for dirt use only. Which means I put them on at the event.
Downside: the view of the speedometer is not the best.
If you do this change, you'll need the steering wheel, installation kit and extender hub. The set up will run you about $70.

i have always thought about changing steering wheels, but i have a question i have an 88 p/u with the horn buttons, one on each side, did the wheel come with a way to hook them up to keep them?

also i had a friend who changed his steering wheel on a different car and the wheel never quite matched up, how is yours, was this wheel specific for the truck or is it the mounting kit that makes the difference

The wheel installation kit comes with a wire for the horn. The horn button on the new wheel is in the center.

The difference is the installation kit and according to their kit chart is the same for all Toyotas. The match up is really good. You will need a sterring wheel puller, a generic one from Pep boys will do fine. The problem is the installation instructions are horrible. The drawings they have make some sense, but then there are other pieces that I had left over that must go to other models. I used the shorter cup over the new insert (They give you two different sized pieces), because it gave be better clearance. I have to go back and place some grease (included in little pill cases) on a part that squeeking just a bit. Also I bought the 2" hub extension (comes separate) Otherwise it fits fine, look decent and feels great.

Mike, I was thinking about posting some pics, and I'll try to upload them, small size of course, but I've had problems loading pics on other forums. It's funny how I can be so ignorant, yet can bring a computer back to life after it's crashed so hard, even dos won't come up.
I'll take some tonight or tommorrow. By the way nice web site.

I took a pic of the steering wheel today and sent it to Mike. It is a dramatic difference in size. So don't freak out too much after the installation.
The blurry white stuff is snow, it started coming down big time during the photo shoot. I figured the 3/4 shot did ok.
thanks DP for info regarding posting pics.

Steering wheel is one of the simplest mods you can almost do! As long as you have a wheel puller! I bought mine for liek 40 bucks from grant and a 15 dollar application kit and about 30 minutes later i had a feeling that was much more bad*** then the stock steering wheel. It was much easier to park with it as well...didnt have to crank it over as many times! Good luck~Chris

I love my old school stock steering wheel. The dual horn buttons make it really easy to super annoy someone. ;D

I was finally fed up with the stock steering wheel they put posts where I like my hands to be so I looked through the junk pile here at work and behold I found a early 90's celica wheel it is over an inch smaller in diameter and is a factory fit it was a no hassle install and I'm loving the steering response it's incredible
