Putting turbo on 22RE

So I am thinking about putting a turbo on a 85' 22RE, I know they make a 22RET but I they only put out about 5.5-7 lbs of boost. I was looking into putting a earlier model supra turbo on it. I know I will have to upgrade the fuel pump. But does everybody think about this. I want to run 10-12 lbs of boost. I hear they can take up to 25lbs of boost. Has anybody done this, and if so what do you think?

I think the turbo idea is really cool, but I would maybe suggest you take a second look at the 22rec. It will be a nice, easy swap (relatively speaking anyway) and will be reliable. There's a reason Toyota limited the boost.....reliability. If you put a big turbo on the motor, be prepared to shell out some real money for things like forged internals. Other factors will also have to be looked at. You are going to want some REALLY low gears to get the engine revving high enough to take advantage of the turbo's max boost which will only occur at higher engine speeds. The power just won't be there down low. I might suggest you look into the Camden superchargers. I've seen a fair number of the old ones designed for the 22r for sale for right around $1000. With some new bearings inside it and the 10 psi pulley, you'd be cooking. LC Engineering ( www.lcengineering.com ) even sells the EFI intake for them now if I remember correctly. With that supercharger, you'd have all the boost you want and it would start coming on real low. A turbo can give you some great bottom end power if the right size is used.

There are a lot of INTERCOOLED turbo mustangs with 5.0 engines that make 800hp and about the same in torque on a stock bottom end, with good heads and pump gas and they have tire shredding power from 1000 rpm up when they punch it.

A 22RE is a little under half the size of a 5.0 and with the right head could make 400 hp and torque, but on a stock bottom end, it wouldn't last very long at all.

Unless you are going run 100+ octane, or are going to use an intercooler, or plan on dropping your compression, I wouldn't be in a big hurry to get into 12+psi.

You can back off the timing to cut the risk of detonation but that will cost you power. You can run a richer fuel mixture to cool the hot air and that will help prevent detonation but that too will cost you some power and by the way, the more air you put in the harder it will be for your injectors to keep up so you are going to need larger injectors.

If you won't be running an intercooler and are running STOCK COMPRESSION, I would buy a small turbo that will spool up quickly at a lower rpm to give you more bottom end power. Keep the boost at 6 or 7 psi, advance your timing until the knock sensor kicks in and then back your timing of a couple degrees to be safe.

If you still want 12psi on a stock engine I would check some of the Buick Grand National web sites, they have had great luck with alcohol and alcohol/water injection on their turbo engines

i have a 22RTE and the turbo sucks i ended up taking it out cause it died and i was told it wasn't worth it to rebuild it or to get another turbo. but thats just my thought

Several things about adding turbos:

1) If your gonna add a turbo make sure that you upgrade your water pump and other cooling parts...your gonna need it!!!!

2) If you plan on Rock Crawling and what not remember that there is usually turbo-lag... so you might not get the power exactly when you need it most...

I would consider trying to find a 22ret and using that as a base to start from.
It may cost you a little more, but it has everything you need to start from.
