With a 2 1/2 inch lift kit on my 98 tacoma, is a diff drop neccesary? I have heard some say yes, and others say if you have manual locking hubs (which I do) that you dont need it.

If your front shafts are in good shape it is not needed. Some people will get slight vibration when in 4wd, but most Taco's have it anyway. Worn shafts and steering comp will exaggerate this. As far as the auto vs maunal hubs, there must be a free-length difference in the splines. Don't quite know the anwser to that part.

the manual hubs when set to free dont turn the CV's, but auto hubs make them spin all the time causing wear when ran at a steep angle all the time

Thats your choice man on that one. Alignment does become a pain at 2.5" and above. I had 8.5" of suspension lift and had a hard time keeping it aligned right and only certain shops will take the time to do it right. Find a shop that works on lifted vehicles if they do a good job stick with them. good luck.
