I was wondering the same thing about truckers and mounting them to the mirror right next to the cab. The only thing I could come up with is the height helps them out. Even with my 4ft whip i'm sure it only goes to the base of where their antenna would start. When I worked for TxDot over the summer we had steel whips on the roof of the truck, and it hit every thing in sight......it was more like a battle mace then an antenna.

Well theres a metal support used to hold the maplights there. So i took that off and with the holes from that thats what i used to mount it, and used the maplight power source for the cd. Its always hot so it can be used when the my runners off. To connect the cable i need to use a 90* adapter.

I did mount my Antenna on the Center of my Toolbox and that seems to be working pretty good. On the Antenna though I have an 8 ft whip and also a shorter one. The whip is great when you sit still but at Highway speeds it bends so far back that the range is very little. So for Antenna type I guess it depends on where you want to use it.
I have got another question though. On the SWR setting. I know those meters are cheap to check it, but what do you do when it is not set correct? How do you change it?

Usually with the 8 ft. whips, you try and cock them forward, so when they're traveling down the highway, they bend back to straight up position, if you look at some big rigs that is usally what they'll do. As far as SWR calibration, I kind of cheat on mine....my CB radio has a SWR meter, which shouldn't be trust but I do. In theory everytime you change the radio, i.e. disconnect antenna, disconnect radio...you're supposed to reset the SWR's. I'm to lazy to hook up the SWR meter every time I disconect the antenna considering I have to disconnect it every morning. I just use the SWR meter on the front of the radio and then there is a SWR calibration nob that I can turn. Here's a picture of the CB radio that i'm running... You can see the SWR calibration knob by the channel knob.

For the whip you are correct, I could tilt it forward, however I have a spring on it and that allows it to bend even further. But I am just using my smaller plastic wraped one and it works fine.
For the SWR. You can adjust it on your radio but my regular Uniden doesn't have that feature.... I think I have seen meters with an adjustment knob on them, but does that mean I have to leave it looped in all the time?
Maybe someone can explain the whole thing.
