Well I'm ready to start my engine for the first time but I need to decide what oil I want to run. I have a whole case of 10w-30 napa brand oil and I'm wondering if I could use that for the break-in? or should I use something else? If I should use something else state why and what type. I don't want to spend money on high priced oil just to change it after 25 miles. then again at 100.

I just put a new engine in my truck and ran 10-30 for break-in. Just use what you plan to run in it for the life of the engine. I was told to change it after letting it warm up and set-up with timming and such, then change it again at 500 miles. I did my 500 mile oil change 15 miles ago and it's running great. The 500 mile oil looked just like it did when it put it in.
Let us know how she runs with the new engine. Good luck.

Well this is my plan. I'm gonna fill her up with the 10w-30 that I have, crank it over with the plugs out untill it builds oil pressure, then fire it up. I'm gonna keep the RPMs about 2000 to 3000 varying between for about 20 minutes. then I'll shut it down,re-torque the head bolts and adjust the valves. then I'll start it back up and let it idle while I adjust the timing and the carb. Then another shutdown and oil and filter change. then I'll take it on it's first drive.then another oil change at 500 miles. Does that sound about rite for a good break in? Oh one more thing. when I shut it down do I let it cool completely before I re-torque the head bolts or do I torque them hot?

Sounds like a pretty good plan to me. I can't answer the question about re-tourquing the heads though. To do that on my V-6 I would have to take half the engine apart and it has the bolts that stretch when the are tourqued. Once they are down that's it. It would be my guess that you would re-tourque then cold though. Just a guess though.
When you go out for your first drive don't let the engine run at a steady RPM too long. If it's a manual trans just keep running it through the gears and running the engine rpm up and down for 10 or 12 miles. This will seat the new rings. After that just drive pretty normal but easy for at least 500 miles. You might want to stay off the freeway for a while, until it's run in a while.
Let us know how it goes.

Well it starts and runs good . The only problem was the front main seal was damaged unpon instalation and oil was squirting out all over everything . so I have to wait till tomarrow to to get a new one. other than that everything works great.

Look at the bright side. At least you know you have oil pressure. Glad it runs well

;D Not tryin' to make more work for Ya, but...headbolts should be torqued cold(are you sure you don't have"torque to yield" headbolts?) & valves need to be adjusted hot. Overall, sounds like a good plan Are you thinking of going synthetic? Later...

well I fixed the oil leak and all of the coolant leaks, tweaked the carb a little and it runs great. I took it for a spin and everything checked out OK. Now I just have to get it registered and I can start seating the rings. yeah I was thinking about switching over to synthetic after the break in. anything I should know about that? how many miles should I put on it before I switch over? I've heard anywhere from 1500 to 5000 miles. I'm not sure about the head bolts, a little tag came on the engine that said to re torque the head bolts after it was ran a few times.

Hey all's need help on a question? I have a 87 Toy. Engine is a 22R / 2 inch lift with 35 inch tires. Anyway, please would anyone know what might be my prob's on my truck. I tried to start my truck and my engine cranks over but it won't start. Nothing is wrong with my battery, tried other good batteries and still won't start. I also got distributor kit and changed all vacuum hoses and fuel injectors are fine. I have a knocking sound in my starter and I just got this rebuilt starter last year. Also, while doing this cranking to start my engine my power steering hose heats up and everything else is cold and remember my truck is not even started / running. Yet, power steering hose heats up bad. OH BY THE WAY, any comments will be helpful.

So the engine wont fire.....you might want to make sure that the ignition coil is completely connected and that it is connected correctly. Also check to see if your plug wires are in good condition. Pull out your spark plugs and see if the gap is too big or if they have been fouled. I would just check the entire ignition system to make sure that it is all good. And dont forget to check your fuses also.
