Well that really depends on the type of wheeling you are going to do . do you want it bulletproof or just to rebuild it . what size tires . are you doing a sas to an ifs . then steering comes into play . if you are just rebuilding focus on the birfield joints . a knuckle rebuid kit , and make sure the ring and pinion mach th rear. if the birfields are bad i would suggest an eliminater kit from randys , its pretty much bulletproof , and uses ujoints so its easier and cheaper to replace if need to.

All that needs to be done is replace all the seals and bearings, and you can bet the seals are bad on a 20 yr old axle, I've rebuilt 2. Just about everyone sells a kit nowadays, AP, Marlin, AOR, but the beast one I've found is the Super Knuckle hit from JT Outtfitters. It costs more than the others, but it includes bearings the others don't, plus the elusive 54mm socket, and a bucket of grease. It ends up being cheaper in the long run, I know. The only other thing that may need replacing are the brass bushings, and they're dealer only, about $25 ea.

its not going to be for a SAS, just a spare for the truck im going to get. the type of wheeling i do is mainly trail but i want to take it through the rubicon and i'll probably be running somewhere in the range of 37x12.5's. i know that birfields are pretty weak when coupled with anything bigger than a 35.... what would you reccomend or hwat have you guys doen to fix it (apor profields?). the axle is from an 85, would i have to do anytthing if i were to swap it onto an older truck or are they the same...... thanks

All the solid axles are the same except for the amount of gussetting under the long side. The '84-85 had the most, then the '83, '82, '79-81.
As for aftermarket birfs, Longfields from Bobby Long are still the best.
