I have an 85 ext cab 4x4 with a 22re. I just got a motor swap with a new head from CNS Motors. I have 31's and a new rear 3rd with 4:56 gears. Starting about 3rd gear i can't seem to get the RPM above 4 grand. Why is that? My last Toy was an 86 with a high mileage 22r and 32's which ran better than this one. Is this just a break in issue? Has anyone had a similar experience?

ive got stock gears, 34's carbejaded and cant get it above 4 grand in third either. is yours a 4 speed? . mine is and i cant use fourth gear because i lose speed in it. no matter how hard i try. i dont know what the deal is but i just ignore it.

It is a 5 speed. It is acting like i am towing something. When i changed the gears i really had an expectation that it would go away and run like i had stock tires.

So, what should i expect out of a 22re with 4:56 gears and 31's? Should i get new injectors? Will the motor run better once i get over 500 miles on the new motor?
I have spent a lot of money getting it running and I have no idea if this is as good as it gets or if i have other mechanical issues to work out.

Try adjusting your valves. They will sometimes tend to tighten up after the engine runs for a little bit. Some crate engines don't even have the valves adjusted to spec when they ship them out. Hope this helps. Let us know. Good luck

I am much better with tech than mech so how do you adjust valves? Is it hard and does it require special tools?

Get a service manual & it will tell you exactly how to do it and the specs. The only special tool you'll need is a .008 and a .012 feeler guage.

UNLESS you have a CAM that isnt stock! then you need to check the cam card. and refer to a manual on how to do it. easy afternoon project. Ohh and my decked out 22r doesnt like going over 4K either. but it pulls hard up to that point. I run 35s and 5.29s. DOA ported and polished intake and head. headers. weber. underdrive pulleys.. blahh blahhh etc.... still doesnt like punching the 4k barrier. Ohh 2.25 exhaust will help that a little though.

I don't know about anyone else but i have a lifted 92 two wheel drive standard cab It can tuck 33x12.5 baja claws but with my shwab 31x11.5s and my 22re it was as fast as a taco eating hondas and playing on the dunes. I had that same problem. I hydro locked put in a new motor and it was just poopy. first i replaced the filter and went to k&n. I started getting exhaust leaks and could keep them gone. Then i pulled the cat, and all the fiberglass honey comb was basicly fused together restricting my exhaust creating leaks. hollowed changed gaskets and worked like new. If it has to be smog legal and your worried about your sensors then go grab one off a newer taco in the junk yard
