I didn't know that they made 5.0. That's cool! I put some 4.7's from Marlin in my tc. I love them! It gives my runner more power than it can ever use off road. The only bad thing is that since I have installed the low gears (3 months ago), I have broken 5 front axles, including 2 Longfields and 1 short side inner axle. No real big deal to install. You have to grind some clearance on the inside of the tc. Marlin has an article on his website that gives step by step and pics. www.rcrc4x4.com/ProductReviews/Marlin4_7_install/howto.htmPut them in and have fun!!! Just bring spares

thanks kjmcdaniel, very helpful info. i am curious why you are breaking so many axles. Do you have a locker in front, and if so what kind?
Oh, and another thing, dose the gears effect highway speed? or only when 4x4 is engaged?

No, they don't affect highway speed as they are Low range gears.
Having installed the AA 4.7's in my truck, I would be extremely careful when grinding the case to clearance the larger 5.0 gear. It would get pretty thin, and a slip would go thru the case.
BTW, the AA instructions are excellent.

Yes, I have an ARB locker, and every time I broke an axle it was engaged. I think that what is happening is that the tire gets pushed back against the fire wall and jamed. I need to cut out my firewall and weld in some new sheet metal to give my tires some more clearance. These gears only effect the low range of your t/c. You can be in high side 2X or 4X and they will not effect your speed. When you shift your t/c to low side, be carefull not to over rev your engine, because you will only go about 6 mph at 6000 rpm

I have an ARB in the front and 36 TSLs with stock birfs, with the axle moved 3" forward the tires don't hit the firewall and I haven't broken anything......................................yet.

fourwd1,
What did you do to move your axle that far forward.
I've got mine about 1.5" forward using AllPro springs, and I am still stuffing 35's into the firewall.
I am going to have to re-work the firewall anyway because I am soon going to be getting some 39.5" IROCs for a competition in Sept.

My front springs are made from 2WD p/u rears, which move the axle 2" fwd, then my front drop hanger moves it another 1" fwd. The xtra inch made a big difference.
I had to cut way into the body mount to fit the IFS steering box far enough fwd.

what material did you use for your front drop hanger. did droping the front hanger give you bump steer or make the truck wonder going down the road?

steel no, but the way soft springs give a little bumpsteer no, I kept the caster correct
