I am looking at buying an 85 4Runner with the 22RE and what looks alot like an FJ Land Cruiser straight front axle. Is this something that occured often if at all. I don't think the guy switched it out so......hence my question. thanks

The 85 and older trucks came stock with a solid axle, while the the 86 and newer have a independant front suspension, wishbone style set up. Are you sure it is not just a regular toyota small truck solid axle?

yes i know 86 and up have IFS, I have an 86 but want the 85 for the solid axle. However it looks different than the axles I see in all the pics. It looks much beefier.

Can you post a pic? I'm sure we can identify it.

Well, I don't know what you do or do not know, so it wasn't meant as an insult. The FJ axle spring pads are not set to the same width as the toyota small truck, so if it is a FJ axle there might be noticeable marks where the oringinal spring perchers were. Also the 85 axle does look a little heavier duty then years previous to 84 with full gusseting all the way to knuckle on the drivers side.

No hard feelings, no insult felt on this side. Now that you do mention it, yeah, it does look like you describe with the full gusseting on the drivers side. the knuckles just look way beefier than I had remembered. Thanks for all your help. I will post pics when I can.
