I own a 81 longbed 4x4, 22r. The charge light was coming on, my lights were dim, the volt meter was all over the place (especially when I put the truck in reverse), and the idle was having a hard time finding its happy spot. I replaced the alternator (with a Talon #14273) and tuned the carb. Now the volt meter in the cab reads past 16 volts and my radio shuts off when I press down the accelerator. Otherwise all of my problems have been solved. It runs great. Voltage Regulator? Too much juice from the alt.? Wrong alt.? HELP! thanks

;D I'm not 100% familiar w/the older Toys. I believe you have an external regulator that is letting too much juice thru. Whether the voltage reg. is int. or ext., it's your problem. Later...

Don't go by the dash voltmeter, they're not too accurate. Use a real DVM.
Toyota external regulators typically are 15 volts or so.

What would make my radio turn off when the truck is revved past 1500 rpm? And my headlights get brighter than at idle. The battery turns the starter just fine.

Don't know for sure about the radio. Is it sock or aftermarket? It could have a protective circuit built into it to keep it from frying if it gets too much voltage.
It makes since that the head lights would get brighter as your rpm's go up, if your voltage regulator was not regulating.

Replaced battery, alt, regulator. No problems except for the friggin charge light is still on. The radio is a Sony.
Another question. . .I am about to lift the truck. What kind of bushing lube should I use?
