Any one out there looking to sell? or have any good advice about the truck and what to look for?? Please let me know if I'm on the right track to a good truck. also the jsarebetter (J's are better) user name is referring to coast guard HC-130J'S vs HC-130H's it's a military plane thing not a jeep dissing the Toyota thing. cool the "J" word is a bad word here that works . I'm out here on the coast of NC if some one is selling.

I've had manuals and autos, the debate between the two is as old as dirt. I like dirt, I also like autos. Is there a problem with the auto tranny for that year after all it was their first wasn't it?? I was looking at the 85's because it's the only stock SFA and auto Toyota ever made, or am I wrong.

The Toyota autos are not the greatest tranny ever built. At least from what I have heard and seen of my grandpa's. Its behind a 92 V6 and the reverse is pretty much gone in it and even with 4.88 gears it can't come close to touching my dads 91 V6 5 speed with 4.56's. It wont back up an incline at all. Sometimes not even in low range. Thats one of the things that deterred me from getting an auto with my Toyota diesel motor but I found out they use my auto in the Land Cruisers and Tundras so it is a newer stronger one.

... I was looking at the 85's because it's the only stock SFA and auto Toyota ever made, or am I wrong. No, you're right. If you plan on building the truck for serious offroading later, the auto would be a bad choice. You can't install a crawler gear in it's t-case, nor can you dual case it.

I'll jump on the auto bashing band wagon. The 22re is already underpowered and adding an auto just compounds the problem. One of the first things I did was swap out my auto for a manual. As for crawler gears not being available for it. I believe Inchworm Gear now makes a crawl box for the auto. Its in the May/June issue of 4WD Toyota Owner magazine. Its pretty spendy though.

The Toyota auto A340 or 30-40L is the same transmission that the Jeep guys rave about. I just put one in my '82. While the 22R is no 350 Chev. I find it quite acceptable for the snow wheelin and trail running. The difference in the 22R with a 5-speed and an auto isn't all that huge after all it's still a 4 cyl. IMHO. Also I went with 4.88's.

Any one out there looking to sell? or have any good advice about the truck and what to look for?? Please let me know if I'm on the right track to a good truck. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ i have an 85 standerd cab 4x4 that had an over drive auto in it. if i still hat it i would pay you to take it!! i had an rv cam in my 22REFI, i liked the auto and it was plenty of power had the Pwer-ecomomy button that was cool. BUT it started to have shifting problems and didnt like to down shift out of 3rd once in a while. i took it to a shop and the guy there looked confused and said "i didnt know they had autos in 85 4x4s" i went to the toyota dealer in olympia and had the same responce and then trans plus told me there was a computer for the trans and it could be that or any number of things. so for $70hr ill find the problem but it will take a while. the T-case i a mated unit and part of the auto. i went back and forth with NWOR.com and Advanced adapters there is nothing aftermarket and you cant adapt them. i was told to uncomman so sorry. all and all i liked mine untill 150,000 miles when i started to have issues and if the motor didnt die i would have payed for the repair. i replaced them with a 5.0,c4 auto and an 85 t-case off a 5spd. the convertion was way less then rebuilding both. "if!" you find 85 with an auto (i only have seen 2) be prepaird to spend for repairs. im an auto lover but recomend a stick
