what are the effects of using smaller tires than your dif is geared for? ie driving on 31's with 4.88 or 5.29?

It puts you out of the engines power band
I ran 235's (approx equal to 28's I think) with 5.29 gears for a couple of weeks and
1) I could start out in 2nd or 3rd 2) I wished I had 6th and 7th gears 3) Sometimes I couldn't find a correct gear to get RPMs right
It was similar to having a crawler gear in the t-case.
Your example wouldn't be quite as bad.

I've got 30's with stock 4.37 gears in my '80 truck, can start in 2nd, and have a top speed of about 75...... downhill...... 'course, a big part of that is i only have a 4 speed transmission... anyway, you get a loss of top-end speed, acceleration, pretty much anything relating to speed. if i remember right, you do get more torque, though, cause at low speed your engine is running at higher rpm's... someone correct me if i'm wrong
