I just installed my Aussie locker. Works great except I notice a humming sound coming from the back of the truck(sounds like an extra set of mud tires rolling) when drvn between 30-45mph it seems to get faster and faster until I cant distinguish it between the tires and it. It goes away as soon as I depress the clutch...Is this gear whine(too much backlash) or poss. a carrier bearing(didnt do it before). Or is this just a normal function of the locker(I doubt;but hope). The locker does lock and unlock normally so it is working. If it is a problem should it be fixed ASAP?

Hate to say it but sounds like you have too much backlash witch in turn sucks bad. Because youy have to tear out the third member again. My aussie doesnt make any noise except the ratcheting and an occasional pop every now and then. I would pull it out asap and dont drive it. You could very easily trash your gears.

Damn thats what I was afraid of...I drove 80 miles highway like that and Ill need to drive 80 miles back to get a dial indicator on them.....You think another 80 miles would kill them? I dont want to have to tow it back unless absolute neccesary..

Does anybody have any tips on setting the backlash on gears. I would like to get some shop to do it for me or even the dealer. But most shops said they dont mess with that stuff and deal said 150-200$ to do it which I know is a ridiculous price. So I'm gonna buy a dial indicator for like 10$ and do it my self.

You have to find a transmission/diff shop to do it for you. My local shop quoted me 100 bucks to set up new gears.

the only transmission places we got around here are the generic AMCO places and they dont do rearends;and we dont have any rearend shops either. There is a 4wd shop nearby that "would do it" but they will only do the whole job itself(replace everything(gears, bearings etc using there stuff=$$$$) not just the backlash...

backlash is typically checked using a dial or test indicator. the measurement is made on a face of one of the pinion teeth, perpendicular to its meshing surface. with the pinion held steady, the ring gear is rocked back and forth, and the play between the pinion and ring gears is measured. toyota factory spec is 0.005" to 0.007, while most aftermarket gear manufacturers seen to recommend .008"to .012". i always try to shoot for about .008,. it is generally not good for any backlash measurement to be less than the specified setup number(etched ont the side of the ring gear). it is also a good idea to watch the backlash variationat 3 to 5 places around the ring gear. overall, the backlash readings should not vary by more then about .002". with the carrier installed and the bearing cap bolts hand sung, dial in the backlash. first tighten the adjusting nut on the ring gear(side where the ring gear is closer than the pinion) to get a backlash reading of about .008". Next tighten the pinion drive side(side where the pinion is closer than the ring gear) adjusting nut until it feels firm. recheck the backlash. if the reading has increased about your previous reading , this means you have over-tightened and added preload to the bearings. If the backlash has increased, loosen the adjusting nut to eliminate any increase in backlash. i hope this helps you out. take your time when checking the backlash. itz not a hard task, good luck!!!

Thanks I'm confused though;I read another install about backlash and it said tighten ring gear side snug then pound the pinion side one full circle(from marks)...that was the article I followed for my install and I guess it screwed me up here it is www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/lockright_locker/index2.htm I'm gonna try other way since the article I looked at wasnt right....

Well I found out what the deal was..If you follow the site I listed;YOU MUST START THE GEARS OFF w/ZERO BACKLASH....I didnt think that was 100% important. It turns out that I had ran my gears at around .025-.03 backlash, which is way over, but I didnt really notice any wear just a small amount of metal in the drainplug. I had driven 180miles with them too. All is well know, but to any onlookers that decide to use that site for installation for a locker remember that very important detail. Otherwise that site is the best one I found on installing a locker!
