a center diff lock is the difference between allwheel drive and 4wheel drive. a locker is something that you put into either your front or rear differential. it causes both tires to spin at equal speeds with equal amounts of power. oh and p.s. toyota's don't have a center diff it's either in 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. try reading more before you post and if you're gunna post make your own topic don't hijack someone elses

The center dif if locked will only go in a straight line you will NOT be able to turn or everything will break unlike having frnt and rear which you would still be able to turn though limited. A center dif when activated is geared 1 to 1 it's for when your really stuck the toyotas that come with these are usually sold in S. America and Africa and in parts of the U.S. and Canada as well TOYOTA used to offer this as a option on the Land Cuisers

are you sure about the whole center diff being locked not being able to turn thing? correct me if i'm wrong but if you engaged a center diff lock that would simply put you into 4wheeldrive instead of allwheel drive. i once saw a toyota tercel with awd and a center diff lock effectively making it a true 4wd. it didn't make it so you couldn't turn when you activated it though. maybe i'm misunderstanding what you're trying to say but from what i understand of what your saying i think that you're misinformed.

I work for toyota we have 24 tech's 3 of which are in the top 10 in the U.S. 1 is the top tech in the U.S. PER toyota he just got back from japan for the ceromony I asked them about it and that is where the info came from he used to own L/C with this option activating a center dif is different from locking it. Activating is your AWD and locking is what I described above

He may have went to Suburu school. Ha, Ha ,Ha
Where Joe Isuzu when you need him.
As to the "top ten Toyota mechanics", I now have to questions my wife's uncle, who's rated very, very high. Good ammo for nut bustin. Ironically, my Toy guru is also a Suburu tech. They make all there money replacing faulty tranny's. O'yeah.... that's "all wheel drive" The "better" one?
PS: The L/C only breaks stuff if the diff's are locked when the transfers locked. Sorry if wrong. but TB, o K Stew

is ifs really that much weaker than a solid axle front?

Depends on what type of wheeling your talking about. If your talking rock crawling absolutly! if your talking baja then no ifs is better. for general trail riding it's very equal. I preffer IFS its alot more forgiving when hitting bumps and IFS has alot better turning radius.(depends on the width of your tires)

but like in the mud, where ifs isn't running extreme angles or anything, can you run the same size tire with ifs as solid axle, and not have probelms?

up to a 33" no problem and a 35" as well but some folks that run 35's with IFS tend to wear out cv's, seals and bearings alot faster do to the extra weight.

but I don't have to worry about snapping shafts every time I go wheeling if if i wanted to run 35s with ifs
