31's with stock gears seem a little weak to me...
What would be the optimum gear ratio for a weekend warrior. It's on the road 98% of the time but I want it to be good on both..

if you dont plan on ever going larger stick with the stock gears, but if you plan on getting bigger tires go with 4.88s for 33s. Unless you have money to burn I myself couldnt justify getting 4.56s(ones for 31's) because of the cost and not that much difference.

if it were me id stick with the stock gears and maybe do like an exhaust mod or something to help pull the 31s, but really its not that bad. I have 32s and it has enough power to do anything I want, and the only time I need more is when there is a red light at the bottom of a long, steep hill. but really, the price of gears isn't worth it if all you want to run is 31s
hope this helps.

Ok, the reason I say is because when I go camping up north, it lacks up hill a little worse than the 30's did..
I have a magnaflow highflow cat on there, with a stock replacement muffler. Do you think if I put a better muffler on it I would pick up a few ponies, or at least pull a little better uphill?

By exhaust mods I think he meant a header. A good header, along with a low restriction exhaust, will improve the power a little.
Keep your stock gears for 31's, def not worth $800-1000 to change them at this point.

$800-$1000??
Damn, I had no idea gears were so expensive! I figured a couple hundred bucks for new gears at the most.
Anyhow, I have the original tranny in it.. What header would fit best? Thorley? LCE?

Yeah, figure:
gear sets - 2 @ $200-250 ea master install kit - 2 @ $100 ea labor - min 2 hr ea @ $70-80/hr, and that is if you pull the 3rds and carry them in.
Thorley header would be the best.

I found one at summit racing for $225. Will this fit with an automatic transmission?

I picked up some 4.56 diffs from a wrecker on the cheap. Far cheaper then regearing and a quick and easy job. And whoever saying there isnt a big difference between 4.10s and 4.56s is dead wrong.

A heavier flywheel also helps with the 31 inch tire problem too. THe flywheel gives you the extra momentum. It is incredible the differnece it makes and I cant believe noone talks about them in any of the chat rooms. I got mine from downey.
Also by the way downeys four into one header gives more useable power than the Thorley. And if you are really into toys the catolog is entertaining.
