I am new here and I am looking to upgrade my new 06 prerunner. It is a 4cyl 5speed. The brochure claims it has a final axle ratio of 4.10. The tires are the stock p245/75r16 mud and snow. I want to get either limited slip or a locker. I will not be doing any serious off roading, I just want more traction in the snow and in the soft sands of Carolina. When doing these types of modifications does the entire rear end change or do the new gears fit inside the existing housing? Also can you get a "genuine toyota part" for this project as to not void the warranty? This might not be applicable if the new gearing is inside the factory rear not to be noticed by dealerships. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The elocker is noticeable from the outside .. you can lets say install a truetrac which is not visible .... I dont know how the law works but one would think the motor should still be under warranty .. maybe the rear gears and axle not. With an elcocker you would get a new 3rd member and use your old gears (which would be silly) or use the ones that come with it. If you get a truetrac you keep you gears and all parts except the carrier. Matt

As long as you are putting in toyota parts and they are installed by the dealer this is the only way to keep your full warranty

The elocker would require you to swap not just the third member, but the entire rear housing assembly. Also you would have to wire it in. Its not really an easy retrofit and i cant see it not voiding at least part of the warranty. I have serious doubts that you are going to find a toyota dealership that is willing to swap the axle for you, its not as simple as being made out here.
I cant see why a LSD would void your warrenty. Obviously its going to void the warranty on the rear axle, but i cant see why it would void the rest of the power train warranty. You could just get a junk yard third, have the LSD or locker installed in it. Then swap that third member in, if you have any drive train problems, just swap back in the stock one before returning it to the dealer. It can be done in under a half hour. I dont see how they could catch on.
Since the LSD was an option on your truck, you likely could buy a complete brand new third from the dealer and have it installed with no effect to your warranty. This would be costly, but at least you would have peace of mind.

for the $$ involved and for what your doing I would get a LSD as sean described but if you want the e-locker there is a novel written with all the info you'll need on this board it should be in the project section

The elocker would require you to swap not just the third member, but the entire rear housing assembly. . I know a number of people that have stuck e-lockers in their existing front and rear axles. Why do you say he has to replace his entire axle
