I'm getting ready to slap some 33's under my mostly stock 91 v6 yota. My dads yota used to run 33's w/ 4:88 but now runs 30's w/ the same gearing. We're goin to swap gears when I get my 33's mounted. But I think only the rear end is re-geared on his truck. Is it ok for me to run 4:88 in the rear w/ the stock 4:10 up front. Will it be tough on my drivetrain, tires, ect. I never run 4wd on pavement, only on mud rocks and snow. So can I get away with just re-gearing the rear end?

"But I think only the rear end is re-geared on his truck"
Reminds me of the 1980's Public Service Announcements.....
"I learned it from you dad, I learned it from you!" Parents who do drugs, have children who do drugs.
Actually, I'd leave the 4:10's in you have now, unless "pops" is willing to pay for the front gears. You'll be the loser, getting rid of the v6 fact rear. 4:88's would be "nice" but they are def. not a neccesity.

So I guess the question is, should I just keep the stock gears. I would lose some power but hopefully not too much. Just so i dont make my old man look like a retard, he had nothing to do with the gearing, he bought it that way. But I'll ask around about leaving it stock.

are you sure only the rear is regeared? that's pretty stupid and i don't know of many people taht would do that. you should get in the mud or sand or something put it in 4wd and see if the front has been regeared as well.

I know, it sound really wierd. My dads got a car lift in his shop, I asked him put his truck on there and stick it in 4 low and mark the tires and see if they spin at the same rate.

Leave the tranny or case in neutral. Rotate a front wheel 360* Count the turns of the front driveshaft. Same process for the rear.
As I said before, your truck will be fine with a V6, 4:10's and 33's.

I have the incredible 4 cylinder power with stock gears and I run 33's. It's pretty much a dog when driving up even the slightest hill on the freeway, or around town I have to whine out in 2nd to keep up to the speed limit. If you have the 3.0/3.slow motor I think you're probably going to want some 4:88's. Get some 4:88's for the front also.
