Wow, what a useless, uninformed and offensive reply/suggestion from Stew.
A guy joins the board looking for help from someone
who has a supercharged T100, and he gets quoted some ridiculous figures and told he's trying to put sneakers on an amputee....
Well Rick, as the owner of a '97 T100,
with the TRD supercharger, I can offer some real world insight to your questions. The only model years that TRD offers for the supercharger are 97 & 98, yes because the ECM's are different in the 93-96 models. I have only heard of one person who was able to switch the ECM's on a 95 and make it work, but at least someone has done it.
The roots-type supercharger makes a tremendous difference in towing ability over stock. I use mine to tow a 2 place snowmobile trailer, from elevations of 6500ft to over 10K feet with no problems. The TRD SC boosts stock performance to 260Hp and 270lb-ft torque with a nearly flat torque curve in the 3.4 ltr. It pulls strong at all RPMs and passing is not an issue, it's a pleasure.
Many people who run the TRD supercharger also use a fuel upgrade kit from Gadget -(

New and used TRD superchargers are available on ebay for less than $2K and that's where I would start. It's the single best modification you can make to add Hp and torque to your T100. Headers, exhaust, air intakes can actually counteract the benefits of the supercharger by losing backpressure, a key to keeping the supercharger running at peak performance. I bet you'll be happy enough with just the TRD SC!
I'm sure Stew was trying to help, but his figures are ridiculous -
$5K for the upgrades you're considering?! - Less than $3K including labor.
Trucks worth is $4-$5K? - He has no idea of your trucks total miles, cab configuration, drivetrain or modifications. His attempt to state a value on your truck as fact, without knowing more about it, is irresponsible and offensive.
Older vehicles don't respond to performance upgrades and they'll never run?!!? I hope no one tells the guys at LC Engineering or Engnbldr or TRD or Got Propane, etc. As Mike Tyson would say, "Ludicrous...."
The T100 has too small a 6 for its size? Well, when it was equipped with the 3.0, yes it was but the 3.slo was HP poor whether it was in a T100, 4Runner, or pre-Tacoma pick up. However, for the record, with the 3.4ltr V6 -
A '97 ext cab 4wd T100 has a curb weight of 3550lbs
A '97 ext cab 4wd Tacoma has a curb weight of 3430lbs
A '97 4wd 4Runner has a curb weight of 3740lbs
Based on these figures, available online with a little searching, it seems that the T100's weight vs the 3.4 is not really an issue compared to the models that were available from Toyota that year.
Based on my research, first hand experience and daily use, I would say the TRD supercharger IS a cost effective upgrade for those wanting additional horsepower and torque for their T100.
