I have recently purchased a 78 land cruiser. I would like to use it as a daily driver and want to know if anybody has upgraded the 2F engine to a 5 speed tranny. If so I would really like to know where you got the parts and what transmission was used.
Also I am having some trouble at higher rpm's after driving for about 20 mins. It seems to want to stall out and it bucks like when you teach someone to drive a stick. The carburator has been rebuilt, the points have been replaced, compression and spark have been tested. distributor has been tested and timing has been adjusted. At this point I am stumped and any help would be appreciated.

I would think putting in a 5 speed wouldn't be that big a deal as long as you find a 5 speed tranny. I haven't done this but I'm sure it can be done. You might check with the guys at Downey Off Road. They seem to do a lot of cruiser work.
The bucking problem... Have you checked the fuel pump? Might be failing when heated up or at higher rpms and not able to deliver the fuel. Also check the fuel filter for any clogs. My old 2F would studder sometimes due to crap in the gas tank when fuel got low. Just some things to check.

thanks for the tips. The fuel pump is only about a month old and has never done this before (I know that doesn't really mean thats not the problem). I will check my fuel filter and pump again though.
and I will post my answer to the tranny swap once I find one for anybody that is interested.

sign up for a www.ih8mud.com screename and check out some of the info on their site, here's a quick link: forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=64529If that link doesn't help, make sure to do a search and you will be able to find all the info you need. I am going to attempt a similar swap, so I've been trying to do some research on the same subject.

I would think putting in a 5 speed wouldn't be that big a deal as long as you find a 5 speed tranny. it would be rather difficult to put in a 5 speed if you didn't have one.....

I worked at a Landcruiser shop for 6 years and own 3 cruisers. My 78 cruiser has a 5 speed tranny in it. It definatley is a in depth job. I used a new toyota 5 speed transmission. If you buy from toyota you get a year waranty and its brand new. They were made for the FJ70. Then you need an fj 60 transfer case with the undercarriage support. You have to cut down the support to fit on your fj 40. There is a rear e brake adapter that you have to also buy. Or you can also get a used 5 speed and transfer with the brake from man a fre i believe. you have to remove your tunnel cover because once you have the tranny in the holes have to be modified to fit back over the tranny. Then once its all in you have to shorten your back driveshaft and lengthen the front. If you need parts for this i know where you can get everything needed. Well good luck
