Hey guys I got an 88' 4runner with the 3.0. I know thats strike 1. But I put a new timing belt with a water pump and the idlers. Runs good. I took it out on a run and while crawling this thing starts heating up. Back at camp took out the thermostat now the water is really flowing and the same thing. Then I put a new fan clutch now it is not as bad but the temp still wants to climb. I am not leaking water anywhere and the the engine has good power. When you get up to decent road speed the thing starts to cool back down. Please any advice is much appreciated. Thanks

W/o the t-stat the water can flow thru the rad too fast to cool it down, put the t-stat back in.
A 20 yr old rad could easily be partially clogged up. A good rad shop should be able to check it, or consider repalcing it yourself.

Thanks fourwd1 I will pull the radiator and have it checked because it is the original. I will put the thermostat back in with either a fixed or new radiator. Thanks again Dave

Try also going for an electric fan. You'll also reduce some drag on the engine since there's nothing "extra" the engine has to turn!

Does the a/c rad help in overheating? Mine starts to overheat after a few minutes when idle at a standstill! But then cools down again when I start moving! I have an electric fan, but it's not as big as the whole rad face ... would it make a difference if I bought a bigger fan? Please bear in mind I live in a very hot country where temperatures can reach up to 42 deg Centigrade all day in the shade! I have an 82 deg thermostat fitted in place and works fine as I checked it!

I run a rad for a 22RTE application on my 22R. With the AC and large PS condensers in front of it, I can idle all day long with the AC on and the temp gauge doesn't move at all.

you said u put a new timing belt on u sure it might not be off a tooth that could cause heat problems and if you do go electric make sure its a big enough fan dont just go with the cheap 1
