I've got a 22r that takes some time to build up oil pressure, sounds bad for 5 - 10 seconds (metal on metal) then biulds up pressure. Pressure slowly decreases as engine idles for 5 min. After 5min of idle the pressure is gone and back to metal on metal sound. The oil pump has scoring in it. New pump on the way. Will the a new oil pump fix this problem or should I check something else.
Thanks

It could be the oil pressure switch.Just a thought.

Try the new pump and double check it with a mechanical gauge. If you are still getting no pressure after a couple minutes you likely have bearing issues. I've never rebuilt a 22re so im not sure if they have an external pump like a dodge or an internal like a chev, but if its internal and you already have the pan off why not drop a couple main caps at a time and have a look. Most of the wear will be on the cap side of the main bearings so there is no need to roll out the upper shell. If you are checking rod bearings look for the wear to be on the upper shell.

Make sure your using a toyota oil filter as well since they help build pressure to the proper level and are cheap and great quality. Pull your pan as well and check your oil pick up to be sure there's no blockage. rod bearings are fairly easy to replace with the motor still in the truck, Just be sure to use factory bearings from the dealer, should only be about $45.
