Sounds like it's your front hubs. Do you have auto or manual hubs up front? If you have auto hubs it's probably time to switch to manual. The auto hubs are prone to failure and take time to engage. The down side to manual hubs is that to engage them you've got to get out and turn them, but I normally leave them locked in all winter (even if I'm not in 4wd).
If you have manual hubs you might need to take them apart and see what is or isn't going on inside.

I concur with joe and his toyota. If they are manuals, they are pretty easy to take apart and inspect. As for the dash light, I wouldn't worry about it, mine doesn't light up either.

But what if he doesn't have manual hubs? Or even auto hubs? What if he has the ADD system introduced in 89? The fact that the dash light doesn't come on should be a clue. With the standard system the 4WD light comes on regardless of the hub position, as the switch is in the t-case. (There could be no front axle or drive shaft and the light would be ON.) With ADD the 4WD light switch is in the ADD assy on the axle, and is triggered by the ADD assy locking the front axle.

For the 4wd light not coming on it's probably the connector at the T-case.The wires from mine rotted and broke off of the connector.

since the ds turns in 4wd just pull the hub assy and see if the shafts turn in 4wd if they do its ur manual hub if u dont have manual hubs then get them (the stock 1s not warn or ne thing) or cromo drive flange
