timing chain failure and cost

Do the 3.4 99 4runner timing belts do damage whe n they fail? I thought I read that unlike the older gens, the chain will fail without collateral damage other than stran ding you on the trail. What's the avg cost for the service. I've got 145k and haven't done it.

The belt normally will just stretch out a little and maybe start cracking if it sits too long and dries out. If you haven't already I'd say go ahead and replace it.
