I have a chance to score a winch for $81.00 Its a Power Winch thats the name. It was baught new in 98' but has never been used. Has anyone ever heard of this brand? It says 10 ton pulling capacity on the side of it. The cable is like 1/4". I dont know how long the cable is yet. Think it will last? I am really thinking of pickin' it up.

If it's the same one a buddy of mine bought a few years ago. It will get ya by for the price. But I'd save up for something else in th mean time. If it is the same: the inner sun gear is teflon or something like that. He had it on his car trailer and stripped it out pulling a fullsize dodge on his trailer with a snatch block. Could have been the age of the winch but either way it did fail him. For 81 bucks I'd buy it just for S and G's.

If I were you I would buy it then try it out before you get into a situation where you really need it. Sometimes you pay for what you get. And a winch isn't something you want to fail when you really need it.

Yea, When I do a lot of hard core wheelin' I usually dont go alone. I learned that the hard way when I first started. It sucks having to walk to a phone and try to get a hold of somebody to pull you out. It would just be nice to have.

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone knew of or had any pictures of some clever winch mounting on a Tacoma. I drive a 99 Tacoma extended cab. I know I could buy a grill guard/front end replacements with winch mounts but I haven't found one that I like. I want something that keeps the original look of the truck and is kind of hidden away. I thought about building a front receiver hitch assembly and using the hitch mouting. Any other clever ideas out there??

I think the front receiver hitch is the best idea I've seen if you don't want the winch there permanently. Plus you can move it to the back if you have a receiver there too. I think thats the only option I've seen if you want to retain your stock front bumper.

;D The receiver idea's the best IMHO. It's what I'm going to do eventually. Sometimes going forward isn't an option & this solves that dilemma. Plus, it can be pulled off when not in use. Good luck. Later...

Thats what I did. I have a 3" body lift with the front bumper lifted. I cut a square hole in my custom front valance and welded in a piece of tube that is I think 3"x3" x1/4" The i.d. is 2". It works out nicely. I mounted the winch on a 1/2"plate with a piece of 2"x2" tube. So it can go in the front or rear. I went weelin last weekend and intentionally got my rig stuck so I could test out the winch. It worked nicely. All the gears inside it are steel no plastic. It didnt really grunt or anything. Works for me.

I've had a 3500 lb Power Winch since 1980 and it's a great little winch. I'll do 6000 with a snatch block. I pulled out a lot of vehicles over the years with it. For $80 you can't go wrong, but 1/4" cable makes me wonder if it's really 10K. I now run a MileMarker 9K and I'm pretty sure the cable is heavier than 1/4". Check out Power Winches site.

Once i got the winch last week I measured the cable and its only 3/16" which kind of sucks. I can get new cable pretty cheap out of j c whitney with the hook on one end. I really dont think it wouold pull 10 tons even with a snatch block. I pulled our 5 ton flatbed truck at work with it on a gravel drive way and it had no problems. I will have to some more testing. I dont want to break my cable before the motor stalls out though that would suck.. Does anyone know what tonnage 3/16" ,or 1/4" cable will hold???

Go to the Warn, Ramsey, and/or Superwinch sites and see what size winch they use 3/16 cable on, then you'll have an idea.
