on www.lcengineering.com under tech notes the (stock motor) 89 to 90 22r and re only makes 103 hp but from 85 to 88 it makes 116. also i have not found any body to answer this question but why does a 22re make 116 at the crank but my friends stock neon motor make around 140 at the crank. 22re is a 2.4 and the neon is a 2.0 dohc. why is there such a big difference is hp on these motors

well the reason being that the neon has more hp even though the displacement is less is the fact that the neon is dohc(dual overhead cams)with this being said there are 4 valves per cylinder which translates to more fuel and air being permittled into the cumbustion chamber. more fuel and air equals more power. the 22r-re only has 2 valves per cylinder. also because of the dual cams in the neon it has a higher redline@6500which gives the engine more room to build tourque and hp. the 22 r-re redlines @ 5200rpms giving it less room.

ok this is justins friend, the neon makes 150crank hp with a dohc. 9.6:1 CR the sohc makes 132 at the crank 9.8:1 CR. both have 4 vales and both are 2.0L. i can see why they have more HP due to two cams 2 more valves etc.alot different map for the engine. but why on the toys does it change what is different in the engine to make up the HP they are making on the toys ??
thanks

do you mean why dont toyota change their engines ... im not to sure of the question.were both the engines you were talking about neon engines. and i dont think the the sohc engine has 16 valves. i have never heard of that because the the valves would be very small or the head would be to long for the block. the purpose of the dohc is to use the same size valves positioned across to each other. it looks like a :: one top and one bottom would be the intake and the other top and bottom would be the exhaust. it a sohc had 16valves it would be like this.... and that would be to long of a cam for the block. and i dont understand the toyota ? you had.

CR and the dohc has dome pitions with a 9.6:! CR reason being the sohc has more CR is that the cumbostion(sp) chamber on the sohc heqad is smaller than the dohc head. both block are the same. only year changes a few things just wanted to clear it up

the older 22r motors have domed pistons where the 90s have flat top pistons
