Is there any way to trim the rear wheel well of the 4runner for tire clearance?
I've been fixing the rust in my wheel wells and considered just cutting most of it off, until I saw how the wheel well was set up. It looks like the sheet metal is welded to wheel well which seems to be heavier guage steel. Maybe even giving support.
I know on many domestic pickups you can just cut sheet metal and be done with it. Doesn't seem as easy on the 4 runner. Thanks

I'm doing that right now on my '84. I've got most of the rust cut out and haven't decided how I'm going to finish and connect the outer fender to the inner wheel well. I want to do more than just fiberglass it. Maybe bend and pop-rivet some sheet metal on first.

Don't know if guys want to spend the cash to get stock openings, but Toyota has patch panels. I paid 85CDN each. Check them out on my weekend wheeling pics. They are shown just glued on with two part epoxy and painted with POR because I did'nt have time to finish it complete at the time.

My goal was a larger opening as well as cutting out rust, but if you have the p/n for the panels, post it. It could be handy.

Mine is a second generation so it will be a different part number, but the stealer has them for your generation as well. They are not listed in the main parts catalouge though, so if the parts counterman can't find them make sure he is aware that it is'nt in the computer.

I fiberglassed my holes (huge ones actually), but I'm not sure how long my first time try at it will last. I used hardware cloth to give some shape and strentgh. I definitely wanted larger openings but it seemed to be more than I could do easily with what I have.
I know some 4runners have it done (like all pro offroad) but then again were talking about a whole new league there.

;D BTT, Why?? Are you trying to run a bigger tire? If so, what size? I'm in the process of fitting 33x10.5's w/a 1" Bl. & 3/4" shackles. What's your end goal?! Later...

I don't really have one goal. Lots of little ones really.
I would have liked to have been able to changed the shape of the opening to something a little less square.
In the beginning I thought it would have been easier to cut off the rust completely and not even have to deal with the metal or fixing it.
Since I fixed it myself I am not sure how long it will last so if someone had ideas for the future it might help.
Lastly I eventually want to run a big tire (35" or better) but want to have plenty of clearance all around it.

;D Fourwd1, you KNOW you need to buy stock in the sawzall business!!!! Bikeguy, rigs are ALWAYS a "work in progress". BUT, the end goal is very impt. to what you do today. My .02 is to get the tires you want & build the truck around them. Later...
