I just picked up a '92 4runner V6 auto. as i'm accelerating, this loud whistling starts going at about 2700 RPM's and continues as i keep accelorating. As soon as i let my foot off the throtle it quits. It doesn't happen when the truck is reved up in neutral either. any ideas? thanks will lyons

Hey, I have the same problem that you do. I just bought my '91 4runner like 2 months ago. Sometimes it whistles just the same as you are saying. But, when it's not going through a whistling spell, it is running really rough and tries to die at redlights. Also it jerks real hard going down the highway when between 1800 and 2800 RPM's when just cruising at highway speeds. It does not go through this and whistle at the same time however so i assume that it is all related somehow. any help would be appreciated.

I never had any whistling problem, but I did have a problem with my '91 V6 jerking a lot around 2000rpm. It also wanted to stall alot when I had stopped and was triyng to start up again. As soon as I let the clutch out, the rpm would fall fast. Turns out I had a bad mass air sensor. Put in a rebuilt one and no more jerking or stalling. I still get a slight jerk when it's been sitting for a while, but problem solved. It's pricey though, so you may try other options first. For whistling, I suggest you check your vacuum lines. May have one that is affected only when the engine is under load.

Could be a vacum leak.

I had that happen as well but, it was on an FJ40.Just like you describe.Turned out to be the exhaust manifold gasket.
