Just wondering if the center section on the rear end housing is the same for 2 and 4wd yota's.. I have a 2wd truck, and want to lower the gear ratio (I installed taller tires). I also plan to lift the truck, and get even bigger tires in the next year or so. right now it has 3.58 gears and I can't use 5th gear until I hit 75 mph. I would like to go with 4.11 or 4.33, and a locker or at least a posi unit. Does anyone know if a center section from a 4x yota will work in my 2x?
Thanks

No, the 4WD 3rd is bigger than the 2WD (8" vs 7.5"), also the axle spline count is different (30 vs 27).
If you have a 1 ton, V6, or Turbo-4 2WD it's a different story, they're said to be the same size and count as the 4WD.

Oh well, thanks.
I guess that answers the next question about getting a housing from a 4X, and swapping axles.... that won't happen either. Is there anybody out there that makes a posi, and gears for the 2wd? Or should I search for a V6 rearend? I want to keep the 5 lug wheels I have.

For gear and posi info, check with places like Randys R & P - www.ring-pinion.com, Drive Train Direct, Drive Train Specialists, etc. Or like you said, look for a turbo or V6 2WD and swap axles.

Well if you'd actually read the thread instead of posting inane comments at the end of every thread to pad your post count, you'd see that getting a 4.10 4WD axle at a junkyard wouldn't work for him for a number of reasons.
And if you paid $300 for a stock rear axle, I've got a bridge for sale I know you'll like.
And try using caps and punctuation to make real sentences.

i really hope your joking with that smack-a$$ replay
if your not joking...i'd be interested in that bridge. I'd sit it next to my axles i bought complete for $250...
personally i think punctuation and capitalization is for people who have too much time on their hands to type
consider this thread padded...

yeah me too as for the axle it is no wider. you discussed 3rdmembers NOT whole assemblies. granted he may have to find away to hook his drivshaft up being the yoke bolt patterns are diffrent but it should fit under the springs and so what if im mistaken move the perches big deal it would still be better for him.if you want to flame go to pirate, stupid shit like that instead of well no your wrong is why the site isnt growing. take you flaming somewhere else, ive delt with that shit before and it isnt tolerated.

2wd are spring under, 4wd are spring over which is why you can't bolt one right in.

The guy did say he wants to lift the truck. Nows the time to spring over that puppy and put in a 4wd axle. Flanges, perches...all that stuff is no biggie. Any decent 4wd shop could do it. Get out of the ghetto low rider and into a baja rig..thats my vote.
;D

I agree flanges and perches is no big deal for any decent off road shop. But I'm 99% sure that you could do the spring over without even moving the perches. The frame width is the same so I'm pretty sure the spring spacing will be the same as well. As far as the flange goes you could get a matching driveshaft and use the correct end when you get your shaft lengthened, or buy an adapter from most Toyota off road places.

Well to help clear this up, I don't want to use the whole 4WD rear axle because I have a bunch of 5X4.5 wheels from my Ford race cars and don't have any 6 bolt stuff. Then I would have to either get axles made ($$$$$$) or run two seperate bolt patters, which look stupid, and would be a bitch for spare tires. Thanks for the idea's, but I think I'll just go with Randy's ring and pinion, they're just up the Hwy a couple hours, and I can get the locker too. Baja, here I come.....

snorkleman, I'd rather spend my time and adventure on the trails than in the shop... ;D
Clutch is working great!!! Even with the taller tires, I pulled out onto the road spun the tires hard in first gear, continued in second, and had a loud bark in third... Now I wonder what it would do with the stock tires on.... But we won't worry about that, just feels good to climb the hills again!

Well..the SAS is still in the works. Gotta get the tires ordered and drill the knuckle...blah blah blah...stuff to do. It will happen but in the meantime have to take care of the family. Bought a landcruiser for my wife and expected child. Picked up a 96 landcruiser from san antonio texas and spent the weekend driving it home. I absolutely love that thing. Electric locking diff's, inline 4.5L six, leather, jump seats...just sweet. Got a good deal with one in great condition with 105K. When I finally get to working on my truck I will be sure to take some pics of the process.
